Piper Jaffray's survey shows that 8% of Apple iPhone 4S buyers switched from Android

With the Apple iPhone 4S officially launched today, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster estimates that 2-2.5 million units of the latest iPhone will be sold through Sunday. And while that is a nice increase from the 1.7 million copies of the Apple iPhone 4 that were sold on its opening weekend, it is a lot smaller than the 4 million in sales that the Yankee Group had predicted for the release of the latest iteration of Apple's touchscreen smartphone.

Piper Jaffray produced a survey of Apple iPhone 4S and found that a majority were AT&T customers. At the same time, less than half are buying the cheapest 16GB model. The results show that 8% of Apple iPhone 4S buyers are switching from an Android model, which is an increase from the 3% of Apple iPhone 4 buyers who switched from the green robot during last year's June launch. Speaking of the Apple iPhone 4, 30% of iPhone 4S buyers are upgrading from the previous version of the phone.

Despite the increase in sales during the opening weekend for the Apple iPhone 4S vs. the iPhone 4, Piper Jaffray noted that the number of people waiting in line outside the Apple store on New York's Fifth Avenue on Friday was lower than last year's figure. The brokerage house says that 460 people were on line today versus 1,300 last year.

Aww don't worry I'm sure someone will buy an android phone and you do tech support right? So then you guys can chop it up while you help him do a master reset since it's buggy and freezing up.

My Droid DX was replaced 3 times because of the crappy reliability of Android Gingerbread. I'm on my 3rd phone and the last patch finally made it stable. This kind of piss poor Android reliability - beta phones made me buy a 4S.

And yes it is better than the Galaxy S2 because it won't crash every day

@taCO50
yeah, the iphone has officially become the cheap POS "smartphone". . . it's cheaper than all the new high end Android devices. . has a free version, a $100 version, and the duplicated S version. . .

how does it feel to now be a "pinto" owner, taco50?

Just like the UK study showed, all the poor people own an iphone. . . a bunch of over drafted losers

http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2040233/iphone-users-red

You can keep your cheap pos Pinto. . . I'm waiting for the new Ferrari

. . .

Is that how we do the apple fanboy car analogy?

@network. The iphone always does it better than android phones. Just because some features on the ip4s are implemented first on android, it does not mean that the implementation is the same.

except the GPU in which the A5's powerVR chip is better. Those benchmarks from a few days ago were only testing GPU performance. Full real world performance an SGS2 runs circles around it. 400mhz higher clock, stronger CPU, double the ram. Good thing iOS doesnt actually do anything otherwise it would be one laggy mofo.

That's your opinion and quite frankly your opinion won't stop anyone from buying it. I don't know too many people who are that disappointed when using an iPhone because of the simplicity and ease of use makes it likable. Tell me if the iPhone had many form factors do you think anyone would complain at all? Just let people choose what's right for them.

My predictions are 4 million iPhones sold by Monday including pre order sales. I also predict 30% of android users will switch over when everything is done. It will be gradual because some aren't eligible to upgrade yet. I think with this launch android market share drops back down to 30 some % and iPhone will go above the 30% mark.

These are all just my guesses of course. I could be way off.

way off its about the most accurate thing you said. Androids activate nearly a million a day. Yay, you got 2 million in a weeks worth of preorders. Wonder who just sold more? And it just said 8% of android owners switched. The nexus launches soon, cant wait to see how many iphone people that are pissed about that 3.5 inch screen and missing all those features will be jumping ship. the SGS2 has already been outselling the i4 for the last 6 months, something tells me if the Nexus is actually IN store this time, it will be outselling the i4s.

@remix. Again, you are pitting the entire android OEM against the iphone. The bottom line is. All phones compete with each other regardless of their OS. So it is unreasonable of you to compare 1 phone against tons of android phones. And why would ip4s adopters get pissed with the ip4s' 3.5 display? It's not like there are no phones out their now with larger than 4" displays, lol. The sgs2 has NEVER outsold the ip4. Maybe in your android fanboy dream it did, lol.

Maybe there should be. Maybe there should be an audit. Maybe Apple isn't doing nearly as well as it claims.

Or maybe it is. I don't know, which is something I explicitly said when I posted that comment. I didn't know and was simply presenting what I thought was a very weird trend for Apple's sales.

I didn't spend much time though. I just went through Apple's quarterly reports, put the numbers in a list, and looked at the trends. Until the beginning of this year, Apple's sales of each model steadily declined until the launch of the new model. Now suddenly, with only Verizon's launch in the bag, Apple reports a clockwork increase in sales of 2 million per quarter?

It just looks fishy. I'm not qualified to spend a significant amount of time to confirm or dispel my suspicions. However, I can voice my suspicions, just like Taco and you are free to say whatever you want.

sniggly. you gotta put this all in perspective. the i4 launched with 1.7 million preorders last year. this year its a hair over 2 million. Sounds great? right? iDiot iBots will take it at face value and try to brag like it matters..

heres that perspective I promised.
Last year, the i4 ONLY launched on ATT.
This year its launching on all 3 big carriers and it only increased by 300-500k.

So the i4s is WAAAAAAAY underselling the i4. It just happens to be on 2/3 more carriers.

The combination of VZW + Sprint adds what.. another possible 140-150 million customers, yet they only added another 300k in preorders.

that is a FAIL.

if the i4s were nearly as successfull as its predecessors, we would be hearing 3-6 million pre orders... not a measily 2 million.. which is a mere 17% increase in preorders when the user base is more than 200% of last year's user base.

How stupid of you. iPhone sold 1.7 million total through the first weekend it was available. This time they sold 1 mil in 24 hours. They'll be close to 5 mil by the time this weekend is over.

So the math is at least double the sales if not more. You're an idiot as usual.

I'd think more would switch over if this was the bonafide iPhone 5. Sadly (for Apple) consumer-ignorance goes both ways and, even though the 4S is probably just as capable as the highest-end Android phones, most people won't see it that way because A) it got bad press and B) it looks the same. If they just increased the screen-size to 4-inches, way more people would be flocking to it. And remember, way more people are eligible now for it because it came out ~3 months later than usual. I'm no analyst, but (in my sick, perverted mind) that explains why more people picked this thing up at launch. If anything, this will spell doom for Blackberry.

@led. This is one of the most common misconceptions or misuse of freedom of speech. Freedom of speech does not mean that you can freely slander anyone, or offend anyone verbally. There's also what we call "ABUSE of freedom". Just because I have human rights, it does not mean I have the right to kill anyone I want. Same goes with freedom of speech :)

Moral values are such a thing of the past. Really sad. People nowadays can't distinguish wrong from right. Tsk, tsk, tsk.
