After watching the video below, you might be wondering if the success of the Nokia Lumia 521 has made Microsoft a little too...brazen? Sure, the device sold out on HSN, at Walmart and on T-Mobile's pre-paid service. But putting the entry-level Windows Phone model against the Samsung Galaxy S4 juggernaut is about as fair as putting the Miami Heat up against the Orlando Magic. Yet, Ben Rudolph is on this new Microsoft video crowing about the fact that he spent $149 off-contract for the Nokia Lumia 521 and $750 off-contract for the latest Android flagship model.
Yes, the difference is about $600 which can be spent, as the video suggests, by going to the Microsoft Store and buying a three month Xbox Music pass for $30, a 16GB microSD card for $20, a pair of Monster Purity earbuds for $100, and an ASUS VivoBook X202E laptop priced at $450. But the problem is that even with all of those extra goodies, at the end of the day, you'll still be sporting an entry-level phone instead of the beast that is the Samsung Galaxy S4.
It's not talking trash about Samsung at all but just saying that you COULD get all that and a pretty nice phone for the money you would buy a GS4 for and frankly, I would get the phone AND laptop instead of just a phone... it a no brainer
Yes I agree 50%
but for me its feels like their trash talking, without actually being talking. if not, its kinda like playing against them self, like saying you dont have to buy any high end phone (including nokia Lumia 920/928/925,xperia z ,HTC one,s4) just buy a Lumia 521/520...
I see your point... but they could have used the 925 or 928 and still would have cost less
The 521 is a very nice phone... and really cheap for what you're getting.. which is why I think they used it here

I agree. They could have done this to HTC One and iPhone 5 which is pricier here in the Philippines. AND it's not a fair comparison for a low (mid)-end phone to a high end one which should really cost you different prices. This is just awful. Samsung has more phones to offer at $149 they should have pointed that out.
I think they're trying to pity galaxy s4
rude talk about competitors - its in their nature
well Microsoft, if your product is good as you say people will automatically choose your product you don't have to do these kind of stupid promotional activities
Microsoft is kind of ruining Nokia's image here...understood that it's selling good, but that's no way to advertise them.
Given the choice between the two, most people will automatically go for S4. It's a no brainer.
I see what he's doing, and it does contain a valid point regarding the cost of high end devices, but he probably shouldn't have mentioned that a 920 is his daily phone, as it kind of defeats the purpose of suggesting that an entry level device can hang with the high end.
In fairness, excepting storage capacity and camera prowess, the overall UX of a 521 isn't much different than any other WP8 smartphone. Closely-sized screen, runs most apps, smooth, lag-free, fluid UI, much better camera than other devices for the same price, which also don't have a flash. Not a bad comparison, just perhaps not the best. A 720 would have been a better choice, perhaps.
It's pity to see so much senseless people here, who lost their sense because of fanboyism.
Even the author of this article failed to understand the reality.
They didn't compared Lumia 521 vs Galaxy S4
Your article title should be
Microsoft compares (Nokia Lumia 521 + three month Xbox Music pass + 16GB microSD card for $20 + a pair of Monster Purity earbuds + a Laptop) to Samsung Galaxy S4 in promotional video
Because they compared $750 product with $750 product and told which $750 product gives you the most for the money you spent.
You all need a serious rehabilitation treatment.. Banghead!
I think you aren't getting everyone else's point. Their comparing apples to oranges, a snake to a worm, or birthday cakes to Little Debbie snack cakes.. You can do the exact same comparison with a low end Android and the Lumia 928 and it would be just as silly.
Most people's reactions have nothing to do with the OS. We're just saying we can see through this BS, and it insults our intelligence.
Why is it an illegitimate comparison? Yes, the Lumia 521 does not offer the flagship status and features of the Galaxy S4, but it is still a fully functional and capable device. This type of ad is not targeted toward tech enthusiasts that know what they want and go for high-end devices. This ad would be targeted at general consumers to remind them that $750 is actually quite a bit of money, and it can buy you some nice toys to make your life even better than just one device could do alone. Try as you might, but a GS4 can't really serve as a laptop or pair of headphones.
You COULD do the same comparison between a low end Android and flagship Nokia, and you could demonstrate a similar sort of value proposition. That's a marketing choice that they choose not to make. Although, in the case of Android, does a low end Android really give you as nice of an experience as a high end Android (because the WP8 experience would be almost identical between L521 and L920)? Maybe that's something they don't want to draw attention to in most markets.
This is just common sense. Of course you can buy more goodies if you buy a cheaper device. We know that. Even if you aren't a techie. My point is making video comparisons is silly because let's be honest, the general consumer doesn't go on YouTube to find video comparisons. They go into a store to see the phones in person and they usually make the decision on that alone.
This isn't a commercial as far as I can tell, it's almost like a blog post. So the people most likely to see this are the techies, and although it may be nice... We aren't actually selling our Note 2s, HTC Ones, or GS4s to get our hands on the 521.
EH, low end windows phone devices have a lower performance and limited apps compared with high end WP devices, if performance was equal then there won't be a flash grip category on the windows phone market, also to most US consumers a phone is 200 on contract so saying 720 its not completely true. Also if a 500 laptop performed the same as 1000 gaming laptop there would be no point on making an improved category... This commercial exist simply because aside from the price the 521 doesn't even compare
Please, when faced with the 920 and the Note 2... I chose the Note 2. So there's no way on goods green earth I would ever... EVER, willingly buy a 521. I'd rather used my wife's old HTC Rhyme, than us that phone. That's saying a lot.
A Act of desperation. Why would I need a 450.00 laptop to keep me connected when my phone which keeps me connected to everything? I can't fit the laptop in my pocket. I understand what MS is saying but in all fairness a HTC One or Samsung S4 is not 759.00 they are now 99.00 with AT&T on contract and 199.00 on other carriers. And there is no way a entry level 521 will go toe to toe with The S4. Come on MS why did you not pit the 928 or even the 925? This ad just reeks of desperation. The 928 and 925 are Good devices which can stand on their own.
