LG G4 and Sony Xperia Z4 appear in GFXBench's GPU test

Two flagship handsets that have yet to be unveiled are the LG G4 and the Sony Xperia Z4. Both models have been the subject of various leaks, and LG has already sent out invitations for the April 28th event at which the LG G4 will become official. The pair also show up on a list of the top 20 scoring smartphones that have gone through the GFXBench Manhattan 3.1 benchmark test.

This test is designed to measure how many frames are processed by the GPU in a set period of time allowing GFXBench to reveal the fps frame rate for the unit being tested. The Sony Xperia Z4 (E6553) employs the Adreno 430 GPU according to GFXBench. The handset scored high by running 1115 frames at a rate of 18 fps. The LG G4 (F500x, H815) has the Adreno 418 GPU inside and ran 348 frames during the test, which worked out to a frame rate of 5.6 fps.

The data also pretty much confirms that the Sony Xperia Z4 will have the octa-core Snapdragon 810 SoC inside, while the LG G4 will be driven by the hexa-core Snapdragon 808.

Thanks for the tip!

worse GPU performance then the Adreno 420 for the G4? boooo

Well, it´s the Adreno 418, and Qualcomm has been quite fair with the naming normally, meaning lower number, lower performance expected.

Supposedly 20% more powerful than the Adreno 330

While Adreno 420 is 30% more powerful than Adreno 330. So the results make sense.

It literally triples the S6 in frame rates. Let's assume the S6 did have double the pixels the Z4 does (which it doesn't), and was tested with a 1080p panel. The frame rate would be 12. Still smokes it.

It depends on the workload. In the off-screen test, the adreno 430 averages around 17 fps while Mali T760 MP8 is around 13 fps. So yes, it's better.

Moving to Manhattan 3.0 the adreno 430 averages around 23-24 fps while Mali T760Mp8 around 26 fps.

Moving to 2.7 or T-rex the adreno 430 averages around 49 fps while Mali averaging around 49.

Why you ask? The Mali has more cores at higher frequency. But the shader performance of adreno 430 is higher. So when you increase the load, the adreno pulls ahead due to it's higher compute performance. But when you move to real life games with much less load, the Mali pulls ahead.

There's also basemark X where Mali scores about 27000 while Adreno about 20000.

It all depends on workload when you are comparing cross architecture. It's not as simple as comparing CPUs.

Smokes it would be really poor grammar for this. In some scenarios the Mali is ahead while in some, the adreno is ahead.

Also there's matter of throttling where the adreno gives up pretty fast and goes to 50% performance after a few runs:

http://images.anandtech.com/doci/9137/GFXBench_New2_M9_575px.PNG

These are very complex topics to compare things. So unless you know the full story, you shouldn't badmouth something.

Correction: In T-rex, the Mali averages 59 fps, not 49.

Naw.. For gaming on tablets the Nvidia shell is amazing and my droid turbo can handle any game with no problems. With the turbo I've played modern combat 5 for 2 or 3 hours and still have some battery and no lag. Device might get a Lil hot but I can hold it.

iPhone has more games. Android has more and better emulators (when comparing iPhone 6 to Xperia Z3c, NOT Galaxy S6)

Imo, Galaxy S6 doesn't really do anything special for gaming, as some games run bad on it, and emulators lag. iOS got lots of fun games though.

Having an iPod gives me the best of both worlds ;) The batterylife and customizability in Z3c is something I prefer in a phone.

@ Busyboy.

Look below.

The Exynos 7420 outperforms the 810 in real life.
Because the Z4 has the same performance as the M9, the S6 will outperform the Z4 in real-life.

But do keep clinging onto your worthless benchmark scores.

Yeah, Z4 is really impressive. Galaxy S6 and S6 edge both sucks. 6.1 Fps! absolutely pathetic. Even 1 year old Galaxy S5 performs better than S6 and S6 edge. No wonder reviewers are complaining about dropping frames when playing games on S6 and S6 edge.

And talking about overheating of SD810, exynos processor on S6 and S6 edge also becomes so hot when doing intensive workload like playing games that reviewers have to put down their phones. LMAO.

I'm really hoping Note 5 will go with UHD resolution. Samsung you better come up with UHD resolution with Note 5. Can't wait for Note 5. ;)

Both devices heat, but the problem with SD810 it heats a lot even while browsing.Sony should have gone with 805 or Mediatek like HTC did, would have been great. And only 1 reviewer said that he had to put down the phone while playing game coz it became hot and it was a pre-release unit like HTC which fixed its overheating issues using a software update.

I don't see any reviewer complaining about frame drops during gaming.

The reason why the S6 is so low is because it's rendering at 1440p on benchmarks.
In real life, games only render up to 1080p, not 1440p.
In real life, the S6 outperforms all other phones and it will outperform the Z4.

http://www.frandroid.com/marques/htc/274664_test-du-htc-one-m9-2

Look at the performance for "Real Racing 3".

The funny thing is that it's the M9 that performs worse than the M8.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNN0I4zB5Wk

The Z4 will perform worse than the Z3.

Kumar will be asshurt.

Benchmarks do not equal real-life performance, you stupid geek.

Benchmarks render at native screen resolution while real games render at 1080p or below.

Look at the chart below to see the real performance difference between the Exynos 7420 and SD 810:

http://i60.tinypic.com/1267lp0.png

The S6 will crush the Z4 in real games.

The 808 is running on QHD while the 810 is running on 1080p. For comparison, refer instead to the offscreen scores

Either way, the manhattan 3.1 is a extreme high-load situation. Also this benchmark is very very new and will get better in next few days. You should pay more attention to T-rex scores which is closer to real-life games.

Maybe this is the 16GB variant?
LG G4 (16GB): SD808 2GB RAM
LG G4 (32GB): SD810 3GB RAM

LG G4 (SD810): 32/64 GB, 4 GB ram

This ran for one minute. We've seen that the 810 throttles due to heat if it runs for a bit. Plus this was running at less that full HD.

My real concern would be the throttling/heat. We'll have to see.

And what will you gain with the extra benchmark score. Real games will render anyway at 1080p. So the QHD won't cost frame Raya anyway. If you want to brag benchmarks, go and run this on your PC.

"And what will you gain with the extra benchmark score" let me answer that for you. BATTERY LIFE

Can you prove that QHD drains more battery. No it doesn't. Remember when PA changed G3 resolution to 1080p and the battery stayed the same. And on OLED a higher resolution screen consumes the same power as a lower resolution one as bigger brighter LEDs get replaced with smaller dimmer ones giving the same brightness overall and consuming the same power too.

Your point has no basis like above. QHD doesn't drain extra battery. Look at Droid turbo battery test.

Did you seriously just say that a 2k display doesn't drain more battery than a 1080p one? And are you really using the Turbo as "proof"? You honestly lost all credibility and respect from me from that post.

PS. Droid Turbo has a 3900mAH battery with a display that can't get over 300nits. Obviously it's going to get better battery life than a 1080p with 3000mah and a Brighter display. LOL

G3 when changed to 1080p doesn't increase in battery life.

http://www.phonearena.com/news/We-changed-the-LG-G3s-display-resolution-to-1080p---we-got-superb-performance-and-negligible-battery-life-increases_id65982

Also S5 and S5 LTE -A have same battery life. One has QHD. You can see the Note 4 too. It's better than Z2 whole having bigger screen and higher resolution. Comparing two devices won't get you anywhere. I gave you 2 examples: g3 and S5 lte-a. Now go figure.

Isn't that obvious that the G3 when changed to 1080p doesn't increase battery life? All full pixels are still turned on but just rendering a smaller resolution, it's pretty obvious the power consumption will be the same.

posted on 11 Apr 2015, 08:54

The panel consumption is the same but the GPU has to handle less pixels.

And for the panel, a QHD panel can be more efficient than a FHD one.

Benchmarks are very different from real games. They can easily scale upto 4k. So in this case, the benchmark runs in QHD. but games will not run on QHD until the next 1-2 years. Moreover, you can change resolution in most games either way.

I need QHD as I can see the difference. Yes, not in games but in Web browser and text. Also the interface benefits. And I'm not superman. You can really see the difference. 1080p is good too but QHD is just like a homogeneous surface. I dig that effect.

You don't think 2K is better doesn't means nobody else does. And there are rumours that Z4 has 2 variants,2nd one will probably come with a QHD display.

And let him answer first, you yourself are asking the question and before his reply telling the answer.xperia takes a whooping of 235 mins to charge completely and s6 just 78mins.
Consider a situation where both phones are dead due to low battery,,both devices don't have removable battery and you have only 30mins to charge a phone. Will Xperia be able to give you 3hrs SOT!!But the S6 will give you more than that. You are always around a charging point doesn't means everyone is.
