Apple iPhone 5C gallery of high-res images, price surfaces
The iPhone 5C originally surfaced as the ‘affordable iPhone’, a device that came with a single goal in mind - offer the Apple experience at a lower price. How low can Apple go, though? The company is well known for maintaining a huge profit margin on its products, and now rumors from China say the iPhone 5C would be cheaper, but not cheap.
The starting price for the iPhone 5C is said to be 3000 yuan off contract, the equivalent of $490. This would make it actually more expensive than the iPhone 4, and closer to high-end phone pricing than to the mid-range.
For Apple, the iPhone 5C might turn out to be a crucial launch. The company is losing market share in various markets across the globe as Android continues its explosive growth, and is now dominating European and Asian markets.
The main differentiator for the iPhone 5C would be its plastic body and that’s where the price cut comes from. Otherwise, the handset should differ little from the current iPhone 5 as it is expected to come with the same 4-inch screen and a similar 8-megapixel camera. Size-wise, it would be very compact and convenient for single handed use. Take a look at its alleged back plate right below.

errrr...$490 is NOT that cheap compared to most phones in this category, i would still get the nexus 4!
Its like the ipad mini pricing in my eyes....
8. tadaa (Posts: 178; Member since: 18 Apr 2013)
Ipad mini pricing is a bit more palatable. Really, i was expecting them to price it at 369-399
40. jove39 (Posts: 1205; Member since: 18 Oct 2011)
Apple should start price at $300 for 5c 8gb model...if they really want to dent android market share worldwide...$490 is not affordable...anyone not married to iOs will go for nexus4...or something competitively priced.

Apple has officially lost their way. Jobs always knew Apple stood for quality if nothing else. Now the Apple brand is soon to be associated with cheap, plastic and oh so nothing special.
Cook I love ya man, you are running Apple into the ground faster than I could of ever hoped lol! and all the more proof that you simply cannot replace legends like Jobs and Gates. Ya, Balmer, how's MS doing since you took over? TERRIBLE you schmuck, my goodness, omg, like really Balmer? really....? wow dude, you suck...
Cook, you are just a man chosen by clueless execs and shareholders to attempt to replace a legend. Jobs was Apple to it's very core and Apple will find out the hard way that Steve's death, will also be the downfall of Apple
57. iampayne (Posts: 103; Member since: 12 Aug 2013)
Do you hear how dumb you sound. You realize Cook has been with the company since Jobs came back in the 90's and was brought onboard by Jobs himself. He has also been in charge since Apple's stock has been skyrocketing. Apple under Cook is still more porfitable than it ever was under Jobs. Also did you forget that Apple has already had plastic phones in their line up, 3G 3GS. So please do us a favor and kill yourself.

Cook is a supply-chain wizard (best there is); however, he's no CEO and product visionary. Proof of the pudding is in the eating. These new iPhones woefully lack the luster that Jobs inspired.
9. alterecho (Posts: 935; Member since: 23 Feb 2012)
Yeah, but a good sort of plastic.
But $490 is not cheap. They need to bring it down.
26. Martin_Cooper (Posts: 306; Member since: 30 Jul 2013)
Good plastic is the kind of plastic you hold and it feels like a premium device in your hand, sturdy and without bending. Something Galaxy S line of Samsung doesnt feel. On the other hand HTC ONE X plastic felt premium and sturdy and gorgeous. We cant judge the 5C until we hold it and test it.
55. Googler (Posts: 813; Member since: 10 Jun 2013)
And it starts, now there's different classifications of plastic where before it was all plastic was bad. Not that this surprises me, the people who constantly ragged on plastic had to eventually come to this stance or realize they'd be hypocrites otherwise.
Negative stance on plastic was stupid from the beginning, same as aluminum equaling quality build standards just because it's aluminum, nothing else.

the hands down best feeling plastic phones are the premium Lumia lines (900, 920, 1020) I cant believe you left the top one out of your comment all while mentioning the One X
62. glentomas123 (Posts: 68; Member since: 01 Jun 2011)
That's so impressive; however, for all of that, you take that so-called "premium feeling" and wrap it up in a phone jimmy. Lol! Samsung knows and realizes that this is what most phone owners will do. That's how they cut cost.
41. jove39 (Posts: 1205; Member since: 18 Oct 2011)
It may be better but not cheap when off contract!!!
4. Jason2k13 (Posts: 549; Member since: 28 Mar 2013)
anything close to $500 is already a high end price, apple fails big time.
23. noim1 (Posts: 286; Member since: 15 May 2012)
IF this is the Price then it's fail !!! ..... then i would buy the iPhone 5S or rather don't buy an Apple at all !!!!.....
47. intos (Posts: 83; Member since: 06 Jan 2012)
if this phone has the same hardware with the iphone 5 the price is good !!
5. julz17ronald (Posts: 45; Member since: 26 Apr 2013)
$490? it's not cheap. I can buy good looking android phone with that price tag.
27. Martin_Cooper (Posts: 306; Member since: 30 Jul 2013)
Thats the point. If you are into iPhones you can buy a cheaper iPhone the iPhone 5C. Same with android. If you cant afford the S4 you buy the S4 mini. S4 mini and HTC one mini are both priced high, around 500-600 in USA and Europe. Apple will never make a cheap phone like you all been dreaming of. Cause they dont need to. As long as they make profit and apple store grows they will be more than fine. If they wanted they could have made new phone for 300$. Have you seen a brand new porches thats in price range of a Toyota corolla?
6. zuckerboy (Posts: 709; Member since: 22 Dec 2011)
apple users always complain about plastic devices. Now what they think about that
24. tedkord (Posts: 3908; Member since: 17 Jun 2009)
They've already rationalized it - Apple uses the "good" plastic. Samsung uses the cheap plastic. Head on over to BGR and check out the comments. One guy even said that only Apple could make plastic premium
28. Martin_Cooper (Posts: 306; Member since: 30 Jul 2013)
According to you all plastic is same? Have you ever seen and touched HTC ONE X? Have you ever used A high end sony phone thats made of plastic? They all feel premium and their plastic is not same plastic you find in a $1 toy. For many people Galaxy S line has cheap feel to it cause of the cheap plastic. I am sure Galaxy S4 has great polycarbonate and its not cheap at all. But it feels. And thats the whole point. I love it how you judge a phone thats not out, that hasnt been announced, that you havent uses, and all according to few leaked images.
38. PapaSmurf (Posts: 6615; Member since: 14 May 2012)
Most people put cases on their phones so the whole "plastic" argument is out of the window. I'm rocking a OtterBox on my GS3.
And if you haven't notice, if you try to have a debate with tedkord, you'll lose. I'll guarantee you that.
43. Fallout09 (Posts: 409; Member since: 17 Oct 2011)
What a shame? OtterBoxes have to be the largest and ugliest case ever made. You can find a case that offers the same amount of protection without sacrificing any of the aesthetics.

What the hell, $500 = 'budget version'?
Yes, it is. Only for rich people who are bad in making sound decisions.
29. Martin_Cooper (Posts: 306; Member since: 30 Jul 2013)
Apple havent announced it, no one knows for sure what and how it will be. And you state that it will be a budget version? Have you found any apple product thats considered budget? They sell premium devices like Porsche sells premium cars. They sell ipods that are far more expensive than its counterparts from other brands. They dont sell cheap or budget devices.
35. ajac09 (Posts: 1211; Member since: 30 Sep 2009)
in the world of apple its a budget device in reality its not.
10. neutralguy (Posts: 1152; Member since: 30 Apr 2012)
Ahm, where should the sim go? There's no sim card tray slot. I won't still take this seriously. All they show is backplate.
11. theminolaboy (Posts: 124; Member since: 18 May 2013)
I told my boss about this which happens to be a die-hard Apple fan who bought the iPhone 4S at launch and then the iPhone 5 a few months later. His reaction? A sour one. Told me that Apple is really going down the drain. And I think Apple should check out what budget means in the dictionary. This phone isn't even going near the helm of being a budget smartphone.
30. Martin_Cooper (Posts: 306; Member since: 30 Jul 2013)
neutralguy There is a hole for the sim tray which you press to pup out the tray. They just havent cut the whole thing that as it seems is cut after since its a unibody shell that you just cut and drill holes and parts after.
12. sri_tech (Posts: 184; Member since: 21 May 2013)
If the rumored pricing is correct then Apple is not going for even mid range market.
The cheapest iphone (iphone 4) costs $450. So this does not change much expect that its 4 inch device instead of 3.5 inch.
This new one will have the advantage of 4 inch screen, faster processor etc..
But the disadvantage will be costlier, cheap looking and build quality compared all other iphones (4/4s/5).
13. ianbbaa (Posts: 194; Member since: 20 Mar 2013)
Where are the iFans...now also the others have a reason to smile about overpriced piece of plastic. Altough S4 and other plastics offer much more, this is definitelly a step back also because of Apple holds its products to be the top notch finest high quality highend...extrarevolutionary.
I do not understand this, they managed even at the skyhigh pricelevel of proper iPhones huge sales, every single new iPhone cause a psychical desease in every iFan...what should mean this? We are gonna split iFans into 2 groups? Now IFans can fight even among themselves - you have iphone? Which one? plastic one??? hahaha..i have a proper one.
They should better spend their R&D money on this plastic to bring the prices down for proper iPhone. (When we consider that iP4 is still on the market, lowering the price and get rid of the plastic project would be much much better). With upcoming devices the same...

This phones going to absolutely merc the resell value of iPhones. Can't wait
17. Sondae (Posts: 181; Member since: 02 Jan 2013)
Waoh! 490$? with that price you can get a well decent high end quadcore phone. That is one of expensive plastic.
18. LetsBeHonest (Posts: 544; Member since: 04 Jun 2013)
That's just too costly..... I thought they are making an affordable version of iPhone but this is too costly for being affordable...
For that price range there alot better Android and WP offerings.
and that glossy finish of the device makes it look cheap..
i own a Lumia 520 its a low end WP phone but that looks more premium than this iphone
i say $350 will be a better pricing, $490 is just too much
20. Dingy_cellar_dweller (Posts: 178; Member since: 16 Mar 2013)
A budget phone.
The only budget thing about this phone is Apple will stay in budget to keep their profit margins high, maybe higher profit margin than the 4s model.
21. gazmatic (Posts: 502; Member since: 06 Sep 2012)

36. jamesedward318 (Posts: 95; Member since: 25 Dec 2010)
Again it is a leak. Not the finished version.
34. ajac09 (Posts: 1211; Member since: 30 Sep 2009)
lol isheep already calling it premium plastic.. you know the same stuff the others have been using for years but now that apple uses it suddenly its amazing. lol idiots
51. xoxoGeorges (Posts: 145; Member since: 11 Jul 2013)
If Apple made phones with crap the fanboys would call it high quality sh*t.
37. jamesedward318 (Posts: 95; Member since: 25 Dec 2010)
The 6 is going to make or break this company. Apple has to drop something that will deuce over every other phone in the industry.
44. Androidsammy (Posts: 6; Member since: 07 Aug 2013)
I have a galaxy note 2 and the plastic doesn't feel cheap.
50. rottger1 (Posts: 1; Member since: 08 Aug 2013)
i have the new ipod 5 and this iphone c looks alot like it. i personally think it is going to be the same as the ipod 5 but with the call app
52. lola99 (Posts: 31; Member since: 03 Aug 2013)
I'd be embarrassed to carry a real one, let alone the $99 version.
56. Stubbazubba (Posts: 1; Member since: 12 Aug 2013)
Yes, $490 is high, but be aware of this: Apple products cost quite a bit more in China than they do in the US. For reference, the 16 GB iPhone 5 in China costs 5,288 RMB, or $864, from the Apple Store, as opposed to $650 in the US. So that price is not accurate for the US market. I expect it'll be $400; still pricier than the Nexus 4 (they have to maintain their brand as premium, so they won't go for rock bottom price), but enough that I might get my wife one (since she likes iOS and I can't bring myself to buy a nearly obsolete iPhone 4), depending on the feature set. I'm excited for 9/10!
