Your iPhone will soon have a room for a driver's license, as long as you live in Oklahoma and these other five states

Back in May, we reported that residents of Arkansas could use Apple Wallet to store their digital Driver's licenses. Now, after a House Bill was passed, another state is about to join the digital revolution — Oklahoma.

House Bill 3015 allows Service Oklahoma to partner with businesses to issue mobile or digital versions of state identification cards, driver’s licenses, or permits.

Signs of an Oklahoma ID in Apple's backend

Our colleagues at MacRumors have found signs suggesting that Apple is gearing up to roll out the feature.

There's no official information from Apple yet, but judging by the timeline of previous Apple Wallet updates, the feature should be live in the coming weeks, if not days.

Your iPhone is not intended to replace physical IDs

These digital copies of your ID papers are not meant to replace them, a spokesperson for Service Oklahoma said. You still need to carry the physical licenses and IDs with you at all times, and showing them on your iPhone's screen is meant for convenience.

However, having the ability to just show your IDs on your iPhone or Apple Watch screen is a great quality-of-life improvement.

Digital IDs and licenses are also accepted at select TSA checkpoints across the United States, and you can also use them in business venues, and in apps that require identification.

Utah and Virginia to follow suit soon

Apple is gradually rolling out digital ID support for Apple Wallet state by state, as there are necessary administrative steps to be taken first and bills to be passed.

Five more states plan to add support for digital driver's licenses, including Connecticut, Kentucky, Mississippi, Utah, and Virginia.

Kentucky already launched a Digital ID app back in January, but the support for driver's licenses is yet to come. There are signs in Apple's backend for Utah and Virginia driver's licenses, so these two states are next.
