iPhone Ultra vs Galaxy Z Fold 8 battle just got a new challenger that could steal the spotlight

With a custom chipset, a bigger battery, and a cheaper price, this phone could take on the iPhone Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold 8.

Samsung recently released its brand new Galaxy Z Fold 8, which looks slightly different from its previous taller foldables. It is referred to as a wide foldable because it resembles a passport when folded and unfolds to a rectangular aspect ratio. The surfaced renders of the iPhone Ultra also suggest that Apple is likely to follow the same design approach in its first foldable.

Interestingly, it appears that the wide foldable market isn't going to be dominated by only two brands. Xiaomi is also reportedly working on a device of the same form factor, and its first image has surfaced online.

Check out the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8 and iPhone Ultra rival

Images of the Mix Fold 5, which is Xiaomi's upcoming foldable, have surfaced on Weibo. The phone appears to have a very wide inner screen, and its corners are rounded, unlike the Z Fold 8. In fact, the display looks way wider than the Xiaomi Mix Fold 4, which was released in 2024 and has a taller display like most foldables.

According to the surfaced images, the smartphone has its selfie camera embedded in the top right corner. The bezel thickness in this device appears to be of the same level that you get on Samsung's foldable.

The Chinese smartphone giant itself has shown another image of its wide foldable in the Hyper OS 4 announcement. In it, the phone appears to be displaying a Notes app. The render also gives an indication that the software has been properly optimized for the wide form factor.

Other known details about the Xiaomi Mix Fold 5

The surface images aren't the first clues we've got about the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and iPhone Ultra rival. Many important details about this upcoming Xiaomi device have already been shared online by reliable tipsters. The one that I find most interesting is that the phone isn't going to be powered by a Qualcomm or Dimensity processor.

Instead, the company is reportedly going to offer its own 3 nm chipset called the Xuanjie O3 in it. The inner display is believed to be 7.6 inches, which is the same size that Samsung offers in its wide foldable. The phone is reported to offer a flagship-level camera system; however, its exact details aren't known yet.

The battery could be of around 6000 mAh, much more than that of the Z Fold 8, and also bigger than the rumored 5000 mAh cell, which Apple could offer in its first foldable. The rising cost of key smartphone components is likely going to affect this Xiaomi product as well.

It is reported to be priced at around 10,000 yuan, which is roughly $1,483 (as per the current conversion rate). If true, that would still be cheaper than the Samsung product, which starts at $1899.

The foldable market is growing

According to industry insiders, foldable smartphone sales are expected to rise by 20% this year. The driving factor behind this is definitely the launch of impressive foldables from Samsung and also the entry of Apple in this segment. The South Korean giant recently announced that it has received 1.44 million pre-orders of its latest Z series phones, among which around 70% were orders for the Z Fold 8.

Xiaomi's upcoming Mix Fold 5 is simply going to be beneficial for users by giving them more options to choose from. However, it's worth noting that this will only be possible in regions where phones from Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi are officially sold together.

When could the Xiaomi Mix Fold 5 launch?

A reliable publication, MyDrivers, reports that the phone has passed the market certifications, suggesting that it is ready for its launch. Early leaks have suggested that the smartphone could go live anytime in August or September. We are already halfway through August, and with Xiaomi officially teasing the device, the possibility of it being just around the corner seems high.
