Thanks to the iPhone Duo and the Galaxy Z Fold 8, passport-style foldables are taking off, but it appears we’re yet to see the most intriguing takes on the idea. A new rumor claims that Motorola is preparing what could be the most interesting wide foldable yet.
Only months after Motorola launched its first book-style foldable—the Razr Fold—rumor has it there’s a new model coming. Rumored to bear either the rather dull Motorola Razr Wide Fold or the Razr Flex name, the device could offer something we’ve lost when the iPhone 13 mini was discontinued.
It has the right shape
Like them or not, passport-style foldables are all the rage right now. Samsung has already faced some production issues because the Galaxy Z Fold 8 turned out much more popular than expected. Both the Z Fold 8 and the iPhone Duo have enjoyed extremely warm reactions from practically everyone.
While I can’t see myself spending about $2,000 on a foldable anytime soon, I can understand why this idea is taking off. The wider displays arrive at a time when many people need a break from the constant scrolling and smartphone addiction.
A new form factor can offer an intriguing solution to this problem.
Many people, me included, don’t want to throw away their smartphones, but they want a more meaningful experience out of them. Instead of consuming reels and tiktoks, I’d prefer to read books and comics, and watch long-form video on my phone. If a wider display makes consuming vertical video a little worse, and other types of content a little better, it could help people break their bad smartphone habits.

It’s the right size

Where Motorola goes above and beyond its competitors is the rumored size of the Razr Flex. With a 4.97-inch outer display and a 6.92-inch inner screen, the phone could be the mini phone we’ve been dreaming of for a while.
Modern phones are unwieldy, and I’m sick of it. However, the iPhone 18 Pro Max has an undeniable utility, going well beyond its excellent battery life. The big display allows me to do more, so I’ll keep choosing it over smaller phones. That’s also the reason the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini failed. We want small phones but big displays.
That’s what the Motorola Razr Flex may fix. Closed, this will be a pocketable phone, comparable to the mini iPhones. However, once you unfold it, you’ll get a display that’s as large as the one on the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Basically, this is the best of both worlds.

On the inside, the Razr Flex is said to get the base Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset, 12GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. There may be a 5,000 mAh battery with 25W Qi2 wireless charging, and a dual 50MP camera. Those are mid-range specs, but they could allow this phone to be much cheaper than Samsung’s and Apple’s offerings.
Only one little thing to worry about
Though the Razr Flex is expected to launch with Android 17 out of the box, I hope Motorola gets inspired by the design decisions on iOS 27.1. Everyone seems enamored with the opening animation of the iPhone Duo, but I think the interface that's utilizing the unique form factor is just as important. I'd love to see something like this on this mini wide foldable, too.
Motorola phones already have some neat custom software features, so I believe there’s a chance for the company to come up with something great. Pair it all with a relatively affordable price tag, and we may have our next foldable hit. I’ll certainly pay attention to it.
