Android Pie will be the first update in a long time delivered to the Razer Phone soon
Razer may or may not have abandoned its plans for a third gaming-centric Android handset after laying off a few dozen employees earlier this year, but in case you were wondering, the company remains committed to supporting the two smartphones it has released so far from a software update standpoint.

Specifically, it seems that 2017's first-gen Razer Phone will receive an official collection of Android Pie goodies at some point in the "coming weeks." That's hardly what we'd call a timely OS enhancement, arriving many months after the 9.0 upgrade for 2018's Razer Phone 2, but we're sure plenty of people would agree this qualifies as a "better late than never situation."

We're mostly talking about Redditors who were mockingly celebrating the one-year anniversary of the last batch of security patches delivered to their devices a couple of weeks ago. That's right, the Razer Phone is not only stuck with the almost two year-old Android 8.1 Oreo version, but also the July 2018 security patch level.

Along with Android 9.0, a new(er) set of security revisions from Google is now slated to roll out to the Razer Phone OG sometime in the next few weeks, although the manufacturer of the powerful Snapdragon 835 handset is not ready to go into specifics just yet. That means we don't have an actual release date, a timestamp for these "Android security updates" in the pipeline right now, or any word on whether or not we should expect further advancement as far as security patches go down the line.

Obviously, an Android Q upgrade seems out of the question, especially considering the Razer Phone hasn't been available in the US for quite some time. Its sequel, however, might eventually make the jump to the next OS version, frequently scoring massive discounts at various retailers in anticipation of a threequel that may or may not be on the horizon.
