Our first real look at Lenovo's Googlebook just leaked and it comes with a surprise

Google pitched Googlebook as a brand new laptop category back in May, built to pair with phones like the Pixel 10 Pro. So it's a little surprising that the first Googlebook hardware to leak is not only laptops. A new report shows Lenovo preparing a detachable 2-in-1 that looks a lot like the best Android tablets already on sale.

Lenovo built a Googlebook that is not a laptop

The images turned up today in a new report, and they look like finished marketing renders rather than grainy factory pictures, which usually means the material sits fairly close to a launch. Two of the three devices are ordinary white clamshells. The third is a detachable tablet with a built-in kickstand, a separate keyboard folio and a stylus that appears to be the Tab Pen Pro 2.

The giveaway is the keyboard. According to the report, there is Googlebook branding sitting below the left Ctrl key, and a 'G' key where the Windows key would normally go. Here's what the leak confirms beyond that:

Dolby Atmos audio with a quad-speaker setup
Stylus support, apparently through the Tab Pen Pro 2
No word on whether the keyboard and pen ship in the box

There's a second tell in the renders. Both laptop lids and the back of the tablet carry a thin light strip, which matches how Google described the family when it introduced the platform.

So these are Googlebooks, even though Lenovo hasn't said a word about any of them yet.

Which Googlebook would you want to try first?

Every other launch partner has stayed quiet

Google named five partners in May, and Acer, ASUS, Dell and HP have shown nothing since. Lenovo now has three machines and an accessory in the pipeline, which is a fairly strong signal about who is taking the Chromebook successor most seriously.

If you're using an iPad Pro with a Magic Keyboard, none of this changes anything for you yet, and the same goes for Galaxy Tab owners. But the people who should be paying attention are Chromebook owners, because this is the platform built to replace the one you're using.

The pieces we're still missing

We have renders and a form factor, and not much else. There's no processor, no display size, no battery figure and no price for any of the three devices.

The detachable is the one I want to see

Google spent May talking about a laptop category, and the first hardware to surface is a tablet with a kickstand, which suggests partners are already treating Googlebook as something wider than Google described.

I'd love to see this turn into a proper Android answer to the iPad Pro, because that's a gap Android has never really filled. Whether Lenovo is the one to fill it is another question, and I'm hoping IFA gives us something more solid than renders.
