Miss an iPhone payment? iOS 27 could lock you out of your apps

There's only a short allowlist of apps that could remain unaffected.

The new Apple leasing program that we told you about could come with a showstopper catch for customers who miss their monthly payments.

If you don't pay on time (that's like a line straight out of The Godfather) your iPhone could block you from accessing most of your apps.

And that's thanks to changes in iOS 27.

New findings

According to 9to5Mac, there are lines of code in the iOS 27 beta that suggest Apple's system would let financing companies limit what a leased iPhone can do if the customer falls behind on payments. For now, Apple hasn't officially announced the "feature", but the code points to a new way of managing financed devices.

The system would allow a financing partner, such as Klarna, to register a leased iPhone and regularly check whether the customer's contract is still good in terms of payments.

If those are missed or another problem arises with the lease, the financing company could place the phone into a special Restricted Mode.

Wait, what?

In that mode, most apps would become unavailable until the issue is resolved. The phone wouldn't become completely useless, however. Apple appears to have created a list of apps that would continue working even while the device is restricted.

These include Phone, Settings, Wallet, Clock, Health, Passwords, App Store, and accessibility tools. I don't know much about law per se, but including the aforementioned in the blacklist would quickly lead to multi-billion dollar lawsuits that would surely bankrupt Klarna or any other player who dares to bar you from calling.

A dark balance

So, the goal seems to be to let users keep access to essential features while preventing normal day-to-day use of the device. And if you're only using your iPhone for its Phone app, you might as well get a cheap burner phone and call it a day.

Some apps that send emergency or safety notifications, including Messages, Home, and certain health-related apps, will most likely also remain available. The code suggests that the financing company may have some control over which additional apps stay accessible.

Future features

Based on the findings, the new system doesn't appear to automatically lock a device after a certain number of missed payments. Instead, the financing provider would decide when to activate the restrictions based on its own policies. That means different lenders could handle overdue accounts differently.

It's crucial to read everything, including the fine print, when you lease a $1,000+ phone, folks.

Apple also seems to be developing another feature called Partner Finance Lock. This is designed to stop people from wiping a restricted iPhone, selling it, or taking it apart for parts while there is still money owed on the device. Although this feature is built into the Find My system, the financing company would not be able to track the phone's location. The connection to Find My is simply there to make sure the finance lock stays active even if the device is erased or restored.
