It has finally happened, footage of an actual working Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra — the successor to the Galaxy Z Fold 7 — has emerged. One thing immediately jumps out, Samsung has made massive improvements to the display crease for the Fold 8 Ultra.
The leaked footage shows the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra in action — video playback, folding and unfolding, and the screen from various angles — and it is a massive step up from the Fold 7.

In footage (translated source) posted by a very reliable insider with ties to the supply chain, a finalized Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra can been seen in action. The phone is super slim, just like its excellent predecessor, and has a display that has a vastly improved and much shallower crease down the middle.
Overall, the design is similar to that of the Fold 7, as the Fold 8 Ultra is what the Galaxy Z Fold 8 was originally meant to be. The standard Fold 8 will instead be a wide-folding phone similar to the Huawei Pura X Max and the upcoming foldable iPhone — likely named the iPhone Ultra — from Apple.
How does the crease on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra look?
Two fantastic foldables from Samsung
Last year, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 blew the Galaxy Z Fold 6 out of the water. It was much slimmer, a lot sleeker, and it featured a much shallower crease.

Samsung has now improved upon that design even further by tackling the one point of contention for some customers, the still-visible display crease. As seen in the video, the crease is barely even noticeable now, and even then only when the phone is held at specific angles under bright light that is hitting the screen directly.
If the Galaxy Z Fold 9 also features some massive improvements — much larger batteries, invisible under-display cameras, or something else of this nature — then Samsung will have had a hat trick of foldable ingenuity.
This is the foldable flagship to get

The aforementioned Galaxy Z Fold 8, not the Ultra, has still not leaked like this, though I would wager that the hour is close. If I had to guess, the Fold 8 will also feature a similarly unnoticeable crease across the display.
However, as I have argued a few times before, I would still recommend getting the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra if you’re in the market for a foldable flagship this year. The base Fold 8 is a new entry, and there is no guarantee that this form factor will take off with the public. Just like the Galaxy S25 Edge, Samsung might decide to abandon it.
There is also the very real possibility that, being first-generation products, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the iPhone Ultra might run into unforeseen problems. The design of the Fold 8 Ultra is a tried-and-tested layout that works great, performs great, and now looks better than it ever has before.
If there is one big question mark here, it’s the front camera on the external display. Leaked design renders have, up until now, shown a drastically smaller camera cutout.

This was supposed to be another upgrade by Samsung this year. But, from the brief glimpse we get of the external display in the video, the camera looks to be the same size as it was on the Fold 7, though I might be mistaken.
Foldable smartphones have peaked

This is it, in my eyes. Foldable smartphones, once a novel and divisive innovation, have now peaked.
I had held off of foldables for so long because I just couldn’t get past the display crease. Then, as the Fold 7 neared launch and we got similar leaks, I realized that Chinese foldables had already made folding displays with creases that were not visible during normal use.
This year, there have been other foldables — like the Oppo Find N6 — that have featured displays with a crease that you would have to try hard to find. Now, with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra also being similar visually, that also means that the iPhone Ultra will very likely have a similarly invisible crease for its display.
Add the emerging wide-folding designs to the mix and, in my opinion, there has never been a better time to switch to foldable phones.
