The iPhone Duo’s inner display’s cover layer has been recently confirmed to be able to be peeled off and replaced if needed, which its closest competitor, the Galaxy Z Fold 8, doesn’t have. This display has a nano-texture that gives it a matte look to cut down on glare and reflections. We asked you what your thoughts were on matte displays vs. glossy ones and were surprised how split you were on your opinions.
No clear winner between matte and glossy
In our poll, the results between preferring matte screens because of the fewer reflections (34.93%), glossy ones for the better image quality (31.09%) or simply not caring as long as the screen is durable (33.97%) were almost evenly split.

The poll stemmed from Apple’s VP of Hardware Engineering, Kate Bergeron, recently confirming in an interview that the cover layer on the iPhone Duo’s inner display will be peelable and serviceable on purpose. Currently, we know that replacing this layer will cost $19 in the US for those with AppleCare+, while the price without AppleCare+ remains unknown.

The top reply by u/shelleon sums it up nicely, highlighting that the “duality of man” can be seen in two contrasting replies. One of the highlighted replies states that the nano-texture looks much better in real life than what you see in photos and videos and the other states that it kills the benefits of OLED on iPads.

There is also a third, very valid, opinion on the matter from u/Upbeat-Armadillo1756, who states that this choice should be left up to the buyer. This is similar to how iPad buyers can choose between the nano-texture screen (which costs more) or the regular glossy option.
There’s even another option for those who don’t want to spend a lot of money which comes in the form of applying a “paper-like” or matte screen protector. However, this part is trickier when you’re talking about a foldable screen.
The iPhone Duo display’s durability also matters
The third group of you, the ones who cared more about just having a durable screen, also have very valid points. Sure, you can buy and layer a third-party screen protector onto the inner screen, but I’m sure many will have an issue with that and prefer a first-party solution instead.
For those, Apple’s $19 swappable layer fills that gap. Together with Apple’s claims that the iPhone Duo’s inner display’s cover layer is 40% stiffer than other materials used in the industry, it makes the decision to go matte feel lower-stakes. The open question is how much that layer swap will cost those without AppleCare+.
Hopefully I like the nano-texture
As a future iPhone Duo buyer, I’m really hoping I like the matte screen on it once I pick up my unit. I am also an iPad user and I don’t usually buy the nano-texture iPads, but that’s solely because of price and the fact that this is only offered on the higher-end iPads.
However, I do outfit my iPads with a matte paper-feel screen protector. I prefer it because it cuts down on glare and makes using the Apple Pencil feel more like I’m writing on paper. Either way, I suspect that I’m going to prefer the matte screen on the Duo as well, since that will be a device that will be in direct sunlight far more than any iPad I’ve ever used has.
For those of you still trying to decide if a Duo is right for you, just know that the screen’s texture may be a decision you end up grappling with. If you haven’t made your opinion known, feel free to do so by voting in the poll above.
