My Galaxy Watch 4 has been tucked safely in the drawer for the past couple of years, but after the latest news I'm afraid to take it out and power it up. According to a Reddit thread, Galaxy Watch 4 devices start to show a dreaded screen issue.

The "green line" issue has become a commonly reported problem on AMOLED screens in the past few years, and it seems the problem has now reached the Galaxy Watch 4.
The issue itself manifests as a green or white vertical line on the affected display. It's tied to the display connector not functioning properly and damaging the screen.
Sometimes this problem arises after a software update, and this seems to be the case with the Galaxy Watch 4.

Redditor HKNworld reports that their Galaxy Watch 4 got a vertical white line across its display after the latest One UI 8 Watch update.
After one ui 8.0 update on my galaxy watch 4, i am honoured with a bright white line
- Reddit user HKNworld
There's no further information in the Reddit post, and it's also worth mentioning that the Galaxy Watch 4 received One UI last year. The update that the Reddit user is probably talking about might be the security patch Samsung began rolling out last month on Galaxy Watch 4.

Can the issue be fixed?
Normally, this type of screen problem is permanent and requires a display change. The display connector fails in such a way that it damages the screen permanently. The Galaxy Watch 4 has been plagued with issues in the past couple of months, including the infamous Red Screen of Death, which is not surprising, given its age.
The model debuted in 2021, and it's nearing its fifth birthday. As Samsung is gearing up to release the Galaxy Watch 9 series in just a few weeks' time, maybe it's time to upgrade.

The "green line" issue has been seen on many old Samsung gadgets, including old wearables. This goes to show that the Galaxy Watch 4 might be at the end of its lifecycle, even though many users might want to squeeze another year or two out of it.
Given it's almost five years old, the Galaxy Watch 4 should at least be subject to battery replacement, as the cell inside might be well over its designated charge cycles.
