We're exactly ten days away from the foldable that could reclaim the "prettiest of them all" title

Huawei's Mate X7 is stepping outside China on December 11.

Another day, another foldable: while we're waiting for Samsung to unveil its super-duper Galaxy Z TriFold, Huawei presented its book style foldable, the Mate X7.

Soon, on December 11, it's supposed to step outside of China, and we'll keep you posted about its availability and price, should you want to give something more exotic a try.

What is it like?

Most likely, there'll be some differences from the China-exclusive variant, but, overall, the "global" version of the Mate X7 (the quotation marks are there for a reason, since we don't know which markets this handset would hit) is a solid – and beautiful – piece of technology.

The Huawei Mate X7, a book style foldable, doesn't have a circular or a rectangular camera island on its back – instead, it combines the two shapes into something dubbed "Gate of Time and Space".

The new foldable is presented as both tough and elegant, coming in colors like Obsidian Black, Cloud Blue, Cloud White, Universal Red, and Phantom Purple (for the Collector's Edition variant). The model that'll debut outside China, though, will allegedly come only in three colors.

I'm starting with the Mate X7 design by no coincidence here. A year ago, when we reviewed the Mate X6, we were stunned and called it "the prettiest of them all":

Why? Well, it's no mystery: the Mate X6 boasts a top-tier construction, conveying a sense of substantiality and superior craftsmanship.

Specs and performance

The Mate X7, like its predecessor, is a premium foldable. The phone is offered in a Standard model, which provides configurations up to 1 2GB of RAM, and a Collector's Edition, which can be configured up to 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage. Both versions share a cutting-edge hinge and a reinforced body design.

The external cover screen measures 6.49 inches with a 2444 x 1080 resolution. When unfolded, the device features a massive 8.0-inch main screen with a 2416 x 2210 resolution and (claimed) 2500 nits peak brightness. Both displays support a 120Hz refresh rate and 1440Hz high-frequency PWM dimming, which I personally appreciate.

The foldable display itself uses a triple-layer structure for physical resilience, consisting of a protective layer, Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG), and a carbon fiber layer, all designed to resist folding stress. Internally, the phone is powered by the Kirin 9030 series chipset, which Huawei claims offers a substantial performance boost over the previous generation. The device runs on HarmonyOS 6 and is equipped with a large 5,600mAh silicon carbon anode battery that supports 66W wired and 50W wireless fast charging.

As far as the camera setup goes, it's a quad-snapper one. This setup includes a 50MP main lens with a variable aperture (F1.4–4.0), a 50MP ultrawide lens, a 50MP periscope telephoto lens with 3.5x optical zoom, and a multispectral sensor. The Collector's Edition further enhances the camera performance with a physically larger main sensor for superior light intake. For video calls and selfies, there are dual 8MP cameras situated on both the internal and external screens.

In terms of prices, the China-exclusive 12 GB + 256 GB variant (a.k.a. the most affordable option) starts at 12,999 yuan, which is approximately $1,835 when directly converted.
