The unplanned update exterminates a bug that could stop you from installing iOS 27.

Exterminating a bug that prevented some iPhone users from updating their phones over a cellular network, on Tuesday, Apple released iOS 26.6.2. The update was sent to iPhone 11 series models and later. You can download and install iOS 26.6.2 by heading to Settings > General > Software Update.

Apple releases iOS 26.6.2 to fix an important issue in a timely manner

If you see the update notification card, follow the directions. Apple says that the update carries a fix for "an issue that prevents downloading a software update over a cellular connection." This bug restricted affected iPhone units to updating over Wi-Fi, which continued to work normally. I should point out that Apple has also released iPadOS 26.6.2 to bring the same bug fix to iPad tablets.

Why you need to install iOS 26.6.2 ASAP

Apple had to time the release of this update perfectly since it plans on releasing iOS 27 as soon as next week. With the long-awaited release of Siri as an AI-powered assistant, Apple did not want to face a scenario where millions of iPhone users could not install iOS 27 over cellular. So if you're looking forward to downloading iOS 27 on your iPhone, you had better make sure that you've installed iOS 26.6.2 as soon as you receive it.

Is Siri being down related to the "Surprise and Shine event?"

I've been using Siri on the iOS 27 Beta since June and it has been getting better with each release. Unfortunately, it seems to be down early Wednesday morning, which could be related to the "Surprise and shine" event that will start at 10 AM PDT/1 PM EDT. Even though the event itself is prerecorded, it is possible that a live hands-on area for the press will include the new iPhone models running the release candidate (RC) version of iOS 27.

I have one small complaint about Siri AI

As a result, Apple could be gearing up for the event by beefing up Siri's back end, which could explain why Siri is down right now. I will tell you this: if, over the years, you were hoping that Apple's digital assistant could answer your questions with more than three blurbs from a trio of websites, you are going to be very happy with Siri's new position as an AI assistant. If there is one small complaint about that, it is that Siri AI takes a little longer to create an alarm or timer.

Looking at the whole picture, that is a small price to pay for a version of Siri that can accurately answer nearly every question you ask.
