Honor Magic 9 Pro Max is made official with an Academy Award-worthy camera setup

It's all about that camera (Part I: the hardware)

The Honor Magic 9 Pro Max is a camera phone and you can tell just by looking at that massive camera island on its back. In there, you'll find:

• 200 MP main camera
• 200 MP telephoto camera
• 50 MP ultra-wide camera

Megapixels alone don't tell the whole story. The main camera packs a huge 1/1.28-inch sensor, paired with an f/1.57 aperture, which means a lot of light will be absorbed by the sensor (and you want as much light as possible for finer photo and video results). The main snapper also comes with OIS, CIPA 8.0—and if we break that one down, it means that the Optical Image Stabilization is officially certified by the Camera & Imaging Products Association to deliver up to 8 stops of shake compensation. In other words, even if you have shaky hands, you'll be able to get remarkable results.

If you're not impressed by now, wait until you hear about the 3-degree gimbal-level stabilization—this allows the actual camera module to tilt and float freely by up to 3 degrees.

The 200 MP dedicated telephoto comes with a massive (1/1.4-inch) sensor as well with a fairly large f/2.6 aperture and similar CIPA 8.0 support.

The 50 MP ultra-wide camera is paired with an f/2.0 aperture, but that's not the end of the camera story on the Honor Magic 9 Pro Max. On the front, we have a 55 MP square-sensored selfie camera with 3D Deep Sensing. This is how you take landscape group selfies while holding the phone vertically.

Additional camera goodies

There's also the Honor H1 imaging chipset. That's the ISP (Image Signal Processor) that makes the magic happen and converts raw, unprocessed data to a clean, viewable image or video.

Honor says the phone also utilizes the industry-first "cinema-grade" directional microphone, which can, in theory, pick up sound from up to 20 meters, suppressing non-target sound at 60 degrees. There are several audio recording presets to choose from, like Micro-Detail, Ultra-Long Range and Extreme Noise Reduction.

However, if you're serious about making movies with this phone, I'd suggest getting a dedicated microphone setup and not risking your shoot.

Finally, we have the Honor SmallRig Mobile Video Kit and a pair of external teleconverters for brutal zoom, the Honor Teleconverter G200 and the Honor Teleconverter G500.

It's all about that camera (Part II: the software)

What do hit movies like Blade Runner 2049, Joker and Dune: Part Two have in common? Well, they're all shot on ARRI cameras and I'm bringing up ARRI because the legendary German company has been collaborating with Honor for the Magic 9 Pro Max.

The mobile camera game is changing big time, as these are not your day-to-day simple photo filters you'd find on other phones. Instead, the Honor Magic 9 Pro Max offers 14 distinct ARRI look presets to choose from and up to 87 official looks across 9 creative themes. You'll have to spend time exploring this, but it will be a time well spent.

All in all, the ARRI color gradings look vibrant and professional, not overblown or artificial. There are over a thousand different LUTs designed for ARRI LogC3. As any auteur will tell you, a Look-Up Table (LUT) is a digital file that maps a video camera's raw or flat color profile to specific output values, instantly transforming the footage's colors and contrast. It's like a mathematical filter that keeps your image's other characteristics untouched and it just changes the color and contrast. Super helpful.

We've got support for up to 4K 60fps "Cinema Grade" recording, 10‑bit color depth and ARRI Wide Gamut 3.

Also, there's the LiveVideo feature which records 1,5 seconds before you press the shutter so you don't miss the decisive moment.

The partnership

Honor and ARRI officially announced their Cinematic Imaging Partnership on March 1, 2026, building on earlier behind-the-scenes collaboration. Honor developed the Magic 9 Pro Max's architecture, camera hardware and design, while ARRI contributed its image science and professional cinema expertise.

The phone's camera system takes inspiration from the 1+2 lens arrangement of the 1937 ARRIFLEX camera. It's all about that professional filmmaking feel.

ARRI's contribution is to the imaging pipeline, including LogC3, ARRI Wide Gamut 3, calibration and official looks. Honor optimized the display for real-time look preview and clear footage monitoring, with low reflectance and high brightness.

It's a flagship of the highest order

Before we go on to discuss the chipset and the battery, I'd like to highlight something really cool about the Magic 9 Pro Max. It utilizes an enhanced Honor C3 chip for connectivity. This should improve your phone's signal in places like elevators, tunnels, subway stations and more. These are the little things that make me smile—not gimmicks (sorry, but what else is the HiLight on the Pixel 11 Pro if not a gimmick?), but practical upgrades.

OK, now to the big talk, big walk stuff: under the hood, there's the brand-new Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chipset. This, paired with up to 16 GB of RAM and up to 1 TB of storage, makes the Magic 9 Pro Max a beast of a phone. We don't have exact benchmark results yet, but I'm sure the performance levels will blow you away.

The 6.8-inch LTPO OLED display comes with an anti-reflective coating and an anti-scratch nanocrystal shield. The refresh rate goes from 1 to 120Hz and the color gamut offers 1.07 billion colors (100% DCI-P3). The panel supports 4320Hz PWM dimming if you're sensitive to flickering and 2,000 nits of global peak brightness.

The battery is mind-blowing at 8,800 mAh (yes, silicon-carbon for the win!) and supports 100W wired and 80W wireless charging speeds.

We're getting MagicOS 11 (based on Android 17) out of the box and seven years of security updates (at least one every 3 months).

Design, colors and durability

The Honor Magic 9 Pro Max is among the most sleek and stylish phones today despite that massive camera island on its back.

Its exact dimensions are 161.64mm (H) x 76.98 mm (W) x 8.59mm (D) and it weighs 233 grams. It's great that we have IP68, IP69 and IP69K water and dust resistance.

Price and availability

For now, the Honor Magic 9 Pro Max launches in China. Its starting price is 6,499 yuan in China, which is about $970 when directly converted. Amazing! If there's an international premiere, the Honor Magic 9 Pro Max will be pricier than in its home country, but I'm curious by how much. If (and when) it steps outside China, we'll let you know.
