Google wastes no time and releases Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2 with enhanced desktop windowing
Beta update brings enhanced desktop tools, multi-window features, and key bug fixes
Right after rolling out the stable version of Android 16, Google has released Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2 for Pixel devices. This beta comes just hours after the stable build dropped alongside the June Pixel Feature Drop, and it introduces several new features, most notably around Android’s desktop mode.
For those not aware, Quarterly Platform Releases, or QPRs, include more meaningful changes than monthly security patches. However, while still in beta, Google says QPRs are stable enough for general use. Android 16 QPR1 is expected to launch officially in September, but Pixel users can already test what’s coming.

Early look at Android desktop features
This release includes a preview of Android’s improved desktop mode for external displays. When a Pixel 8 or Pixel 9 device is connected to a monitor using DisplayPort, users can enable a new desktop session from the Developer options.
In this setup, the phone and monitor run independently. Apps appear only on the screen they’re launched on, and the external display gains a taskbar for pinned and active apps. Windows are resizable, and apps can be placed side-by-side, similar to what you’d find on a desktop computer.

For those using a Pixel Tablet with display support, the desktop session can stretch across both screens. This allows windows, content, and the pointer to move between displays, acting like one unified workspace.

More desktop multitasking tools
Google has also updated last year’s windowing features. New improvements include:
- Saving window size and position between sessions
- Support for multiple desktop sessions with keyboard or gesture switching
- Flexible window tiling and arrangement
- Multi-window support for apps like Chrome and Keep
- Compatibility improvements to help legacy apps display properly on external monitors
These upgrades show Google is steadily building out Android’s ability to function more like a desktop when connected to larger screens.
Bug fixes and device availability
QPR1 Beta 2 also fixes several issues found in Beta 1, including:
- Auto dark theme not working
- Crashing in Now Playing
- Camera not launching
- App shortcuts missing after install
- Home button issues in app drawer
- Misaligned “More wallpapers” button
- Gemini not working on lockscreen
The update is available for a wide range of devices, starting with the Pixel 6 series, all the way to the Pixel 9a . It also includes the June 2025 security patch and can be obtained by registering for the Android Beta for Pixel program.
Google seems eager to keep momentum going with Android updates. Releasing this beta right after Android 16’s stable build signals that the company wants to stay ahead in software innovation. While not every feature will matter to all users, the focus on productivity tools could make Android more versatile for those who rely on their phones for more than just the basics. I, for one, am excited to try out desktop mode ASAP.
