Google's new restrictions on Gemini 3 Pro for free users could push you toward paid AI plans

Gemini 3 Pro capabilities have been restricted for non-paying users.

Google has reduced the number of times you can use the Gemini 3 Pro and Nano Banana Pro for free daily.

There are new restrictions for non-paying users

Google's latest large language model, Gemini 3 Pro, was released earlier this month. Similar to Gemini 2.5 Pro, the company limited access for free users to five prompts per day.

However, Google has now updated its support page, stating that due to very high demand for its latest LLM, users who haven't subscribed to either of the Google AI plans will receive only "basic access" to Gemini 3 Pro. Basic access means the limit will change frequently, depending on the load on Google's AI servers. The higher the load, the sooner your daily Gemini 3 text prompt quota will be reached. During my testing, I found that the limit was reached for me after just three prompts.

Similar changes apply to the Gemini 3 Pro image creation model, Nano Banana Pro. Until now, non-paying users could generate three images per day using this model, but that limit has now been reduced to two images per day.

This doesn't mean you won't be able to use Gemini at all once you reach the daily limit. You'll see a message indicating that you've reached your limit as a free user, and your responses will then be powered by Fast with Gemini 2.5 Flash instead of the latest Gemini 3 Pro model. Image creation will also revert to the Fast model, which isn't bad, but it won't deliver the same level of detailed, high-quality image creation as the Nano Banana Pro model.

Additionally, NotebookLLM announced that it is rolling back access to the newly introduced Nano Banana Pro-powered Infographics and Slide Decks for free users due to overwhelming demand for these features. Interestingly, an "additional limit" has also been implemented for Pro users. There hasn't been any mention of a fixed number of how many times Pro users can access this feature, suggesting that the limit will be dynamic and will change depending on server load.

Will this new restriction force you to subscribe to Google's AI plans?

Stop worrying about hitting limits by subscribing to Google's AI plans

Google has implemented Gemini 3 Pro text and image creation limits only for non-paying users. Paid subscribers will continue to enjoy the same limits and features as before.

The Gemini AI Pro plan, which costs $19.99 per month, provides access to 100 prompts and 100 image generations per day. The recently introduced $249.99 Gemini AI Ultra plan offers 500 prompts and 1,000 image generations per day. You can subscribe to either of these plans if your AI requirements aren't being fulfilled by Gemini's free daily offerings.

That brings us to the most important question: should you really subscribe to one of the Google plans? I personally have access to the Google Pro plan, but only because I got it as a free perk with my Jio mobile recharge. If that hadn't been the case, I wouldn't have subscribed to either of the Google AI plans, at least not for what they currently offer and depending on my use case.

Gemini 2.5 Flash is more than enough for most of your text prompt requests. As mentioned earlier, image creation is probably the main area where you'll notice a difference between Gemini 3 Pro and Gemini 2.5. But again, that alone shouldn't be your reason to spend at least $20 per month unless your work requires generating a large number of high-quality AI-generated images. You also get other benefits like 2TB of cloud storage, but that's a lot - probably too much - for a normal user.

In essence, if your work demands a lot of high-quality AI-generated images, detailed responses, and large storage capacity, then you can surely subscribe to either of the Google AI plans. Otherwise, the free plan is more than enough for a typical user. And in case you run out of your free Gemini 3 responses, you can switch to ChatGPT, which is equally good.

You'll get up to 15 responses and can even create images using ChatGPT's most advanced model, GPT-4o, for free. Once you run out of free ChatGPT responses, you can switch to another provider. I've been using this trick for quite some time and have managed to avoid paying for these AI tools.
