Some months back, industry insiders and renowned tech leakers began revealing how Apple is planning to change the display on the iPhone 18 as part of a bigger three-year iPhone revamp. Now, official reports have begun coming in, confirming that the leaks and rumors were indeed accurate, and that the iPhone 18 is ditching the Dynamic Island.

No Dynamic Island

A little over three years after its unveiling, Dynamic Island — Apple’s unique approach to punch holes for smartphone displays — will end with the iPhone 18. To be more precise, Dynamic Island is likely being removed from the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone 18 Pro Max. The base model iPhone 18 will probably retain it for a while longer, just like the iPhone 17e.

Instead, according to a new report (translated source), prior leaks about Face ID sensors being moved under the display were spot on. The iPhone 18, or just the Pro models for now, will be switching to a punch hole design instead.

Is a punch hole a better alternative to the Dynamic Island?

But why is Apple shifting Face ID sensors below the display on the iPhone 18? Simple, it’s the first step towards the vision that the company has for its phones as the 20th anniversary of the iPhone grows nearer.

According to very early reports, Apple plans to skip the iPhone 19, and release the iPhone 20 in 2027 to celebrate 20 years of its flagship smartphone. For that special occasion, the company is planning on designing a new iPhone Pro model that will have a display perfectly free of any cutouts.

The front camera will join the Face ID sensors in their place below the display, and the screen will reportedly meld into all four edges to create a perfect, bezel-free viewing experience. Moving the Face ID sensors under the display of the iPhone 18 is likely Apple’s way of getting its user base accustomed to its new design approach.

I can’t wait for next year

As a display purist, I have severely disliked the trend of notches and punch holes on smartphones. It is, in my eyes, one of the worst things that Apple has popularized across the industry, with the removal of the headphone jack being a close second (yes, I still want it back).

If the iPhone 20 Pro is indeed going to introduce a display with no distractions, and if it does inspire other phone makers to follow suit, then Apple will finally be making amends. I cannot wait for the iPhone 20 Pro, and hearing about the iPhone 18 moving forward with under-display Face ID fills me with hope.
