How would you like to score free unlimited talk and text along with 10GB of high-speed data each month using T-Mobile's 4G/5G networks? Here's the story. In 1985, the federal government created the Lifeline Assistance program that provides low-income households with free wireless service. This allows those who cannot otherwise afford such service to stay connected to loved ones, healthcare (often ignored by low-income families), government services, and more.

Assurance Wireless and the Lifeline program

One of the companies that offers free wireless service each month under the Lifeline program is Assurance Wireless. The latter delivers wireless to low-income residents in 40 states. If you receive certain state-funded benefits like Medicaid or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which is a federal program administered by state agencies, then you might be able to apply for service.

You can qualify to join Assurance if someone in your household participates in one of these programs

If you, or a member of your household, participate in one of these assistance programs, you might qualify to join Assurance Wireless:

  • Medicaid/Medi-Cal
  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Food Stamps or SNAP)/CalFresh
  • Supplemental Security Income
  • Federal Public Housing Assistance
  • Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance
  • Tribally-Administered Temporary Assistance for Needy Families
  • Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations
  • Tribal Head Start
  • Veterans and Survivors Pension Benefit

You can also qualify based on household income. Based on your state guidelines, if your household income is at or below 135%-150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, you may be eligible for Lifeline service.

As we noted in the opening paragraph, Assurance Wireless provides qualified subscribers with free monthly calls, text and data. You can bring your own phone or purchase a low-cost handset. There are no credit checks, annual contracts or activation fees, and your monthly cell phone bill is always $0.

There is a paid plan with slightly more data

If you need additional data, Assurance has the Data Peace Of Mind plan which features:

  • 12GB of High-Speed Data
  • Unlimited Talk
  • Unlimited Text

You will be billed either $10/year up-front, or receive a bill each month for $1, plus tax. Data Peace of Mind is available via MyAccount (monthly plan), Assurance's street teams, or from Customer Care.
