Patience is running thin: the S27 Ultra's camera must be revolutionary, and fans know what they want

Samsung shouldn't 'play it safe' anymore.

For generations, the Galaxy S Ultra lineup, including the S26 Ultra, was seen as one of the best camera phones. With four rear sensors and a 200MP main lens, this phone has the 'proper' hardware for mobile photography. Or does it?

A much-needed change

In a recent survey, we asked readers what kind of camera upgrade would make  Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S27 Ultra worth buying. The results are in, and they point strongly in one direction.

A notable 60.41% of voters want a complete overhaul, suggesting incremental changes are no longer welcome. Meanwhile, 19.35% believe adding a new sensor would be enough, and 10.85% of respondents think that improvements in software and optics are required.

And then, only 9.38% feel the camera system is already good enough. Taken together, these results paint a crystal-clear picture: users have grown tired of small tweaks.

Will this rumored change do the trick?

A recent rumor suggests Samsung may actually make some changes on the camera front next year. Reportedly, the Galaxy S27 Ultra might debut with three instead of four sensors, with the long-standing 10MP 3x zoom lens potentially being removed.

But will that be considered enough of an overhaul? It might, provided Samsung makes up for it by perfecting the other three lenses.

Spicing up the main camera

Recent leaks have indicated that Samsung may be working on an all-new main camera. The S27 Ultra's primary sensor might feature variable aperture technology and LOFIC ultra-high dynamic range support.

If true, then the upcoming flagship might indeed give users what they clearly want. With the omission of the 10MP 3x zoom and the massively changed primary camera, the next high-end phone may finally break the rut.

But is it all in the hardware?

Of course, we must also pay attention to software. The third most wanted change is precisely optics and software upgrades. But if Samsung is taking a radically different approach to the Camera King's setup, will image processing be spot-on right out of the box?

It's too early to know. Yet, one thing is painfully obvious: a complete hardware overhaul won't really matter if the brains behind the megapixels can't keep up.

A long road ahead

The bottom line is this: Samsung can't keep going with small camera tweaks, and readers have made this clear. To me, the tech giant needs to pause, reassess its approach, and start delivering the goods.

Otherwise, it just won't stand a chance in the camera race. Brands like Vivo and Oppo are already turning heads with their imaging solutions, and Apple is also rumored to add a variable aperture sensor in its next lineup. The competition is clearly strong, and Samsung can't afford to fall behind.
