As you might know, some iPhone 18 Pro Max units connected to the AT&T network have been losing their cellular connection, leaving the phone stuck in SOS mode. When you see SOS in your iPhone's status bar, it means that your device is not connected to your cellular provider. The idea behind SOS mode is that it tells iPhone users that they are not connected to a cell network, but in case of emergency, they can still make a call to emergency services, an SOS call, so to speak.

A software update does no good in this situation

Typically, in a case like this, you would expect Apple to push out a software update that would correct the issue. Apple has said that it has identified an issue that causes the iPhone 18 Pro Max to lose service. As a result, affected iPhone 18 Pro Max users can't make or take calls, access their texts, or use any data.

There are some things you need to know before you start running down the streets of your nearby city screaming at the top of your voice:

This issue is affecting only iPhone 18 Pro Max models.
This issue is affecting only iPhone 18 Pro Max users on AT&T.
This issue is probably not contagious so, if you have a different iPhone or use a different wireless provider, don't worry about your phone.

Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max users on AT&T, with service, need to install iOS 27.0.1

If you are an AT&T subscriber with an iPhone 18 Pro Max and haven't experienced any issues, you should make sure that you've installed iOS 27.0.1. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and follow the directions.

The update was developed to prevent issues from occurring in the future to iPhone 18 Pro Max units on AT&T. It will not restore service to those units connected to the AT&T network that are not working.

All Apple can offer these customers is a replacement iPhone 18 Pro Max, and that is exactly what they have agreed to do. Apple says that the number of AT&T customers experiencing this issue is small, but this is still going to cost Apple a pretty penny.

What to say if you walk into an Apple Store with your defective AT&T iPhone 18 Pro Max

You can also schedule an appointment at your favorite bar (that's the Genius Bar, of course) or walk into any Apple Store. If you do the latter, ask a technician to process an immediate hardware replacement under the iPhone 18 Pro MaxAT&T Cellular Issue Exchange Program.

Some are blaming the problem on the handset's modem. This year, Apple is using two different 5G modems on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max: the Apple C2 and the Qualcomm Snapdragon X80.

The iPhone 18 Pro and all iPhone 18 Pro Max units outside of the US employ the homegrown Apple C2. All US iPhone 18 Pro Max handsets use the Snapdragon X80. The iPhone Duo, to be released on October 23, will use the Apple C2.

The truth is that there is no proof yet that the modem is causing this problem with cellular connectivity with the AT&TiPhone 18 Pro Max. This has the promise of turning into the largest iPhone connectivity issue since the infamous "Antennagate," which marred the release of the iPhone 4 back in 2010. Ironically, because the iPhone was still an AT&T exclusive when the iPhone 4 was launched, AT&T subscribers were also the only iPhone users in the US having the connectivity issue-just like now.
