Apple may go back to Intel for its upcoming laptop chips
Apple stopped using Intel processors for its laptops years ago, and it has been working exclusively with TSMC for the production of its chips ever since. However, that might change as early as 2027, when some MacBooks may start using chips manufactured by Intel.

Intel might manufacture some entry-level M-series chips for Apple

Apple may be looking into ways to diversify the production of its M-series chips by partnering with Intel. According to Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Intel may start manufacturing the lowest-end M-series chips as soon as mid-2027.

Unlike the last time Apple used Intel chips for Macs, Intel will only manufacture the Apple-designed M-series chips based on the Arm architecture. Previously, Apple relied on Intel-designed x86 processors.

The new chips will be manufactured with Intel’s latest 18A process. The company claims that’s the “earliest available sub-2 nm advanced node manufactured in North America.”

Coming to MacBooks and iPads

If the new information is true, devices like the MacBook Air, iPad Air, and iPad Pro may launch with Intel-manufactured M6 or M7 chipsets in 2027. Apple will continue to rely on TSMC for the manufacturing of the more advanced Pro, Max, and Ultra versions of those processors, and for Apple’s mobile A-series chips.

Kuo says the impact on TSMC is likely to be negligible. He claims that the order volume for the entry-level M chips is already small, and it will be further impacted by the launch of the rumored MacBook Air with iPhone-class processors. However, Apple will be able to diversify its supply chain and record a win with the Trump administration and its “Made in America” agenda.

Fans won’t love that

I think that’s a great move for Apple, but fans will surely be skeptical about devices with Intel chips. Intel has been doing so badly in recent years that it has to rely on TSMC to manufacture its own chips. Putting aside its financial hurdles, the company has fallen way behind the leading chip manufacturers. I don’t think Apple will accept inferior chips, but I’m still curious if Intel will be able to deliver.
