For some time, there have been reports of Apple working on something that is, in my opinion, one of the best ideas that the company has ever had. This may surprise many of you, but I am talking about the AirPods which would be equipped with cameras and powered by the new Siri AI.
Unfortunately, one report indicates that the camera AirPods have been canceled for now. I don’t believe that they will never come back, but the project — which was so very near to completion — has been “suspended” for the foreseeable future.
Why are camera AirPods Apple’s most innovative product?

So, why exactly do I think that AirPods with cameras are the most innovative idea that Apple has ever come up with? Because, simply put, it’s something that doesn’t exist — not in this form, anyway — and it solves a major problem that some customers have with smart glasses today.
Apple is just one of the many phone manufacturers, in addition to other major tech companies, that believe that smart glasses might just be the future of smartphones. However, not everyone wants to wear glasses all the time.
But you know what’s a product that many people are very comfortable using in public? Wireless earphones. That is where the camera-equipped AirPods come into play.

I can come up with a few reasons for why Apple might have suspended work on these AirPods.
For starters, the current pricing crisis across the industry might have forced Apple to reevaluate whether these AirPods are worth the investment. As with any new product category, there is a high chance that the AirPods would not have sold well, especially at the prices that Apple would have had to launch them at to combat the aforementioned crisis.
Second, smart glasses like the Meta Ray-Ban are gaining popularity, and as such are also appearing in the news more often, with not all of the headlines singing their praises. For example, the Meta Ray-Ban leak your private moments, and even though Meta is doing damage control in the worst way possible, the truth is now out there.
Perhaps Apple realized that releasing such a product in these times would garner it scrutiny and criticism, and so it decided to refrain from doing so. For all we know, though, the company is still full steam ahead on its smart glasses, which it will very likely market with strong promises of user privacy.
Lastly, there might have been other problems that have surfaced during testing. I saw someone on Reddit bring up the very real possibility that hoods, hats, sunglasses, and other apparel might have interfered too heavily with the AirPods and their ability to see the environment. If I can’t ask my AirPods to translate a menu that I’m looking at because my hair is in the way, then what’s the point?
Time is running out for this brilliant idea

Unfortunately, if Apple has canned the camera-equipped AirPods, then we might never see them again. Or they might come out in a market that has changed so much that they are now obsolete.
These AirPods would have worked in this day and age because most major smart glasses brands are putting out models without displays. Once true AR (Augmented Reality) smart glasses become the norm — which could start happening as early as next year with the Meta Orion glasses — these AirPods would have very few buyers left, in my opinion.
I know that privacy is a concern and that many of you are wondering who even asked for these. But I genuinely think that this is the most innovative piece of kit that Apple has designed in years, and it might never even see the light of day.
