A newcomer just set a battery milestone in foldables – but you might not be able to buy it
The foldable phone market keeps growing. Now, a new player in the book-style foldable form factor has appeared, and it's Nubia. The company launched its first book-style foldable phone, the Nubia Fold, recently, and the device packs the biggest battery we've seen in a Fold device.

Nubia Fold comes with a generous battery

Nubia has released previously Flip-style foldables, but the Nubia Fold is its first book-style foldable, similar to models like the Galaxy Z Fold and Pixel Fold. The phone comes with a powerful flagship chipset and the largest battery on a book-style foldable – 6,560mAh one. Unfortunately, though, the phone seems to be currently only available in Japan. We've not heard whether it will be globally released.

Nubia Fold's big battery surpasses the Honor Magic V5 in China (6,100mAh), the vivo X Fold 5 (6,000mAh), and, of course, the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which actually has a pretty small (in today's standards) battery at 4,400mAh.

Meanwhile, the Nubia foldable supports 55W wired charging, which should ensure a full charge in about 70 minutes.

But that's not all that the foldable has in its favor. The phone sports top-notch specs. It has a big 8-inch folding OLED screen with a 2,480 x 2,200 resolution, while its cover display is a 6.5-inch OLED. Under the hood, the phone is powered by the flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, found in the Galaxy Z Fold 7, 12GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage.

The camera isn't entirely the baddest out there, though. We have a 50MP main camera, a 50MP ultra-wide one, and a 5MP macro sensor. Each screen also has a 20MP selfie camera.

In the meantime, the Nubia Fold has an IP54 rating, which means it's only splash-resistant, so you should be cautious around water. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold, on the other hand, is the world's first foldable equipped with an IP68 rating.

The Nubia Fold is only available in Japan for now, and it remains to be seen if the device will be sold somewhere else.

Would you be interested in the Nubia Fold if it launched globally?

The foldable market is growing

The foldable market is becoming stronger and stronger as we speak. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is the most refined Fold by Samsung so far, and it's gathered quite a lot of popularity. This pretty much means that the world is opening up for foldables (no pun intended) and their overall popularity is growing.

Apple is also expected to join in next year with its first foldable iPhone. The phone is said to be coming together with the iPhone 18 Pro models in the fall of 2026, and rumor has it that the Cupertino tech giant has managed to eliminate the display crease.

There are also tri-folding phones now. Huawei was first there, with Samsung recently announcing its first tri-folding Galaxy as well.

Other companies have also released foldable devices, including Google with the aforementioned Pixel 10 Pro Fold and OnePlus, alongside other brands from China. However, the Nubia foldable currently holds the record for the biggest battery.

Keep them coming, I'd say

I'm a fan of the concept of foldables. I like that they are portable, yet unfolded, you get a bigger screen, and you can do a lot on them. My biggest issue with the form factor is the crease in the display, which is frankly bothering me, even though many people say you can get used to it (you don't, if you're like me).

Nevertheless, I think that foldable phones have huge potential to become super mainstream, if only the crease gets improved, as well as their durability and probably battery life. So I like that Nubia has worked on offering a bigger battery cell. The only thing I don't quite like is that it may not be sold elsewhere. Let's hope that Nubia surprises us.
