Samsung breaks its phone sales record: reaches over 300 million sold units in 2011
Samsung Electronics said that it had already broken its sales record and has sold over 300 million phones in 2011, a first for the company which is closing the gap between itself and the world’s biggest phone maker, Nokia. Samsung reported that it passed the 300 million threshold by the end of November. To put it in perspective, in 2010 the Korean company sold 280 million phones.

"We look forward to extending this success going into 2012," JK Shin heading Samsung's mobile division said.

The current sales figure for 2011 means that the company averaged nine handsets sold each second or 820,000 phones flying off the shelves each day.

While a big part of the sales comes from more affordable devices, Samsung confirmed that its Galaxy and most notably the Galaxy S and this year’s Galaxy S II were a huge contributor to the record sales. Nearly two months ago Samsung said its S II flagship sales went over the impressive 10 million units, again a new sales record for the company. The Galaxy lineup is the company’s trump card, helping push it past Apple and Nokia to the top of smartphone sales last quarter.
