Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 is updated to Android 6.0.1

Last month, Samsung Netherlands' Facebook page suggested that the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 would not be receiving an update to the Marshmallow build of Android. That would have left Android 5.0.2 running the slates for infinity (and beyond!). However, one of our loyal PhoneArena readers got in touch with us today to report that his Galaxy Tab S 8.4 Wi-Fi received the update to Android 6.0.1.

According to our tipster, the update weighs in at approximately 900MB. Despite the report from Samsung Netherlands, there were benchmark tests seen earlier this year showing the tablet running on Marshmallow. The update adds contextual search from Google Now On Tap, and the ability to give or deny an app permission to use certain functions on a feature-by-feature basis. And with Doze, your inactive tablet will shut down apps running in the background in order to increase the battery life of the device. Those are just some of the improvements that you can look forward to with the update to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.

If you own the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 or Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5, be on the look out for the notification telling you that the update has arrived. Before you start the process of updating your slate, make sure that you're connected to a Wi-Fi network (if you have the model with cellular connectivity) and have your battery charged fully.

Thanks for the tip!

Are you sure you have one? I have the 10.5 and I updated to 5.02 some time ago. So either you've never tried to update or you have a knockoff clone, or you don't have one.

And with the Android N launch upon us, this is actually in pretty good time considering it's Samsung we're talking about.

Good time? It's a year late getting the update. This is one huge reason why I'm not a big fan of Android, even though I have an S7 Edge. When iOS gets an update, everyone within the hardware requirements range can get it immediately. Android has to pass through carriers or just take it's ridiculous sweet time for no reason at all.

My galaxy tab pro never received any updates from the time it was released. It was doa because they released the tab s shortly after it. Next tablet is going to be a nexus or iPad just so they can get some updates. My iPad 2 just reached the end of it's life last year, and how long was it out for.

I feel you. I had the Note Pro 12.2 which I bought with VZW. Samsung Galaxy just totally abandoned it. It did get Android 5.01 and that's it. I sold it. I miss it, but just wasn't worth keeping.

My Note Pro 12.2 is lollipop. Use it occasionally to read manga. I respect your decision to sell for me I keeping it. Because my tab S 8.4 screen is still consider too small for that purpose. My only dislike for it is it's IPS panel not an OLED one like tab S.

It's my favourite tab due to the OLED screen no strain on the eyes reading eBook at night.

I use my 12.2 all the time, like for this comment. It's sad that I've become used th Samsung's slow,to no updates. Sad but I like there devices so much I keep buying. I am the type that waits 7 or 8 month before I buy tho.I wish the 12.2 would get marshmellow as well. No update for my 8.4 and 10.5 tabs as of yet but I'll stay on the lookout for it. Thanks for the news Phone Arena.

Any chance of my Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition getting Marshmallow?

Hi brasstax I think the Galaxy Note 10.1 or my 12.2 are way out of luck for any more update from Sammy. I think there are mods on XDA it you want to root your device. Well we can hope.
