Latest Apple Pencil patent application suggests Apple iPhone 8 support

Latest Apple Pencil patent application suggests Apple iPhone 8 support
Remember all that talk earlier this year about a possible Apple iPhone 7 Pro? While Apple ended up sticking to the Apple iPhone 7 and Apple iPhone 7 Plus, we might see the iPhone 8 Pro debut as the super premium model designed for the 10th anniversary of Apple's iconic smartphone. This would be the model with edge-to-edge glass, Touch ID embedded in the display, a curved OLED screen, and possibly support for the Apple Pencil.

Apple appears to be taking seriously the idea of having the Apple Pencil work on at least the premium 10th anniversary iPhone, if not all of next year's models. A patent application filed with the USPTO and recently released, is called "Devices and Methods for Manipulating User Interfaces with a Stylus," and is a continuation of earlier patent filings made by Apple in June and September of last year.

The USPTO documentation discusses sensors that would allow a special menu for the stylus to appear on the device's screen as the stylus moves closer to it. The stylus could also open certain apps from the lock screen. With the writing tool, users will be able to draw, write text, trace photos and more.

So far, the Apple Pencil is available for both iPad Pro models. By having the device supported by at least one of its handsets, Apple will be in position next year to take on the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 (or whatever name Sammy uses) and its S Pen.

Suddenly, all those "He was referring to phones" naive excuses are nowhere to be found...

The things is that you don't need it to use the phone like the old Palm Treo and blackberrys. It's also an option and not something built into the phone.

Hahaha, and there you have it folks, there's the new excuse to defend apple's hypocrisy. FYI, it wasn't about needing them, they merely arrogantly and shortsightedly despised its use in any case, including on Tablets ( http://sck.pm/mBI ). That is of course until the competition showed them how its done; it's literally the gateway to serious productivity you can only get from a Tablet form-factor ( http://sck.pm/g9p ). Now, they're shamelessly back-pedalling on all their arrogant claims, just like they did with the toyPad XL ( http://sck.pm/ci0 ), OLED ( http://sck.pm/dCE ) on the new macbooks and probably the next iphone, etc. But like divine company like die-hard fanatic, not surprised to see you eat your words and come-up with another excuse, hypocrite.

Most stylus or pencil is powered by 1 x AAAA battery. The one introduce by Apple has a irremovable battery. I hope the rest of the OEM don't follow Apple's greed. I just have to change my DELL stylus battery after a year of use, hate to fork out another 50 bucks or 99 bucks for a replacement stylus/pencil.

Apple never copy. Only lead the tech(and the media) LOL Now seriously. BTW Apple will NEVER make embedded pen/pencil, because Apple can not develop non-battery pen technology. Apple are not real tech company anymore. Apple can only draw some cartoons and patent them(only in US) Bet on that Apple already patented even the Time Machine(in US) with few kid's drawings. And just wait to hear that some tech company is on the way to develop it. Apple are good in inventing new ''fancy'' colors, though/s.(used since years by the other OEM's)

Apple's foray into the phablet territory should have been a Note competitor, with Apple Pencil, to begin with, imo. I'd be interested to see if Apple can now come up with a challenger to the Note line, with Apple Pencil in tow, but Apple will definitely need to make the iPhone and the Apple Pencil have features that rival the Note/Note Stylus. But Apple can't drag their feet with it. The best time to do this is for the next iteration of the iPhone.

That will depend on wether Apple includes their pencil with the iPhone or keeps it as a separate accessory. The iPad pro was designed to be used with the pencil and it was significantly more expensive than any other iPad but the pencil was a separate purchase.

True. But one would assume that if Apple is attempting to make a true Note competitor, the pencil would be included with the handset. Then again, they made the pencil a separate purchase from the Pro (as you pointed out), so there is a chance that they will stick to that formula. It'll be dumb if them to that if they do indeed try to make a true Note competitor, though. All speculation, of course.

Judging by their latest accessory choices it is highly unlikely that they would include it with an iPhone model.

I'm gonna join your conversation. My feelings on this is: FINALLY! This is one of only couple of features that I wanted that android manufacturers had. I would love the imbedded version like Note, but I'd be happy for the pencil to work on a phone. Either way win-win: if Apple wanna sell more pencils they go too support more devices. And those that prefer iOS will benefit from (from my experience) best digital drawing tool to date.

Well said MG. There's not one thing the Plus does, that really defines it as a phablet, just its screen size is all. The Pencil should also go inside the device, not just be an accessory. Clocks ticking, Note 8 is happening.

Exactly. Apple just made a bigger iPhone, is all, with the Plus series.

Well how about they start with multi window since that is easier to do than pencil integration.

"Devices and Methods for Manipulating User Interfaces with a Stylus" I thought Apple didn't believe in a stylus other than one called a human finger. Also the obligatory copying remark. Those patent pictures look virtually identical to what Samsung's Note series has been doing for years.

To keep up with the Note line, and actually have some phablet features, Apple needs this big time. Right not the Plus model is simply a bigger iphone, a tele photo lens isn't a phablet feature.

Agreed. I think it's time we see a true Note competitor, and if it's going to be Apple that releases one, they need to pack it with all the bells and whistles to truly be able to make it compete with the Note line.

I highly doubt it'll be this next one. I also doubt they'll ever integrate the Pencil.

That would be a fail on Apple's part if they don't integrate the Pencil. I also think it would be a fail if they didn't take advantage and release it with the next one.
