Huawei announces its powerful Kirin 710 processor for mid-range smartphones

Huawei's new mobile chipset – Kirin 710 isn't really a surprise since we've reported about it about a month before the Chinese company announced it. The new mobile processor is aimed at mid-range handsets and it's supposed to compete with another chip, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710.

However, unlike Qualcomm's Snapdragon 710 processor that's manufactured using the 10nm process, Kirin 710 utilizes TSMC's older 12nm manufacturing technology. Basically, this means that Huawei's chipset slightly bigger than Qualcomm's CPU.

According to Huawei, the Kirin 710's performance is 75% higher than that of the previous generation, the Kirin 659, whereas multi-core performance is 68% higher. Regarding the technical specifications of the new chipset, Kirin 710 accommodates eight CPUs: four Cortex-A73 clocked at 2.2GHz and four Cortex-A53 clocked at 1.7GHz.

Graphics-wise, Kirin's new chipset includes an ARM Mali G6 GPU (graphics processing unit) that's likely to be 1.3 times faster than the one packed inside the Kirin 659 chip, and 1x more energy efficient.

Last but not least, Huawei's Kirin 710 features LTE Cat.12 and 13, as well as dual-SIM and dual 4G LTE support. On a side note, the first smartphone to be powered by Huawei's Kirin 710 processor is the recently unveiled nova 3i.
