Nowadays, we are used to seeing two categories of phones — the everyday stylish carry-on, usually a pretty flagship; and the so-called “rugged phones”, with integrated armor to help them survive rougher lifestyles.

Rarely do we see a survivor-class phone. One that has the features to keep you connected when you are way off the grid, all while being tough so it can be with you all the way through.

Well, this is the Hotwav Hyper 8 Ultra — a device that fuses smartphone technology with outdoor explorer equipment. Check out what it has to offer:

Tools of the trade: a full hiking toolset in a phone

  • Walkie-talkie: The Hyper 8 Ultra comes with a built-in pro-grade walkie-talkie system. That includes a radio antenna, which supports both analog and digital transmission over UHF and VHF. It has been tested to work at up to 20 km across open terrain, keeping teams in touch where the cellular coverage refuses to go.

  • Very loud speaker: A 125 dB loudspeaker makes sure that this phone is heard. You can use the built-in siren sounds to slice through the noises of engines and machinery, you can hear voices clearly, you can even use it to enjoy music when it’s time to wind down.

  • True night vision: A real infrared night vision camera will help you in any situation — working over machinery failure during the night, or when your trek takes you through a cave, or when the sun goes down way too soon and catches you off guard.

  • Camping light: Not a simple LED flashlight, but a matrix that can illuminate a campsite, a workstation, or an emergency site with ease

  • Massive battery: with a 12,000 mAh battery, the Hyper 8 Ultra is made to last through the adventure. It also allows for reverse charging, so you can share that power.

The AI engines underneath

The Hotwav Hyper 8 Ultra features two AI engines to keep it contemporary and helpful. There is Hi Hoti — the text-based assistant that can help you do research, compose, brainstorm, and problem solving. To keep it fun and personable, it can communicate through a few different types of personalities, with their own style and expression.

The HT PhotoX AI engine is dedicated to image processing. Delete objects, edit backgrounds, or restore damaged photos with ease and while on the go.

The hardware that powers it

The Hotwav Hyper 8 Ultra comes with 512 GB of storage and 12 GB of RAM, and a 6 nm MediaTek chip that hums beneath.

The display is a 6.8-inch, 2k resolution, 120 Hz panel for smooth animations.

The main camera has a 108 MP sensor and allows for 4K video recording, while the front has a 32 MP selfie camera.

Pogo-pin charging dock and Pro version

Additionally, you can get a pogo-pin charging dock that keeps the phone upright while charging it. You can just drop it in but keep a video call going, for example.

There’s a Hyper 8 Pro variant, which has all the features outlined here minus the walkie talkie — for people who would need all the tools this phone offers, minus that.

You will be able to buy both the Hotwav Hyper 8 Ultra and Hyper 8 Pro come December 12th from Amazon, AliExpress, Temu, eBay, and other online outlets.

MSRPs are $579.99 for the Ultra and $439.99 for the Pro, but there will be special discounts to celebrate the launch, so keep an eye out!
