What smartphone was the most popular handset in the world during the second quarter? DeviceAtlas published data indicating the 12 most widely used models in a variety of different countries. The results are based on second-quarter mobile web traffic over sites that are partners with DeviceAtlas and its device detection platform. Before we answer that opening question, let's build up the suspense by looking at the results in the U.S.

In the states, 10 out of the top 12 most popular phones from April through June were iPhones with the iPhone 7 leading the way. With a 7.85% share, the 2016 model edged out the iPhone 8 Plus. The 2018 iPhones can be found at number six (iPhone XR-5.06%), number eight (iPhone XS Max-3.00%) and number 12 (iPhone XS-2.76%). The Samsung Galaxy S8 (2.98%) and Galaxy S9 (2.95%) were numbers nine and 10 respectively.

In fact, during the second quarter the Apple iPhone 7 was the most used phone in the U.K. (9.58% share), Germany (6.02%), France (6.86%), Spain (4.69%), Italy (4.83%), Ireland (7.67%), Netherlands (7.66%), Portugal (5.03%), Romania (4.19%), Poland (6.94%), Russia (6.76%), Sweden (9.93%), Norway (9.63%), Denmark (10.63%), Finland (6.43%), Colombia (5.38%), Turkey (5.58%), Japan (11.73%), Singapore (7.21%), Australia (6.98%) and South Africa (4.22%). In some markets, like Mexico, the iPhone 7 Plus (5.22%) and iPhone 7 (4.19%) finished numbers one and two, respectively. In Ukraine (a country that has been in the news lately), the iPhone 7 was second.

It should be no surprise that in South Korea, domestic manufacturers like Samsung and LG dominate at the top. The Galaxy Note 8 (5.54%) and Galaxy Note 9 (4.97%) were numbers one and two with the LG X4+ (4.22%) next. In India, the world's second-largest smartphone market, Xiaomi and Samsung dominated the list with the Redmi Note 4 (3.22%) on top followed by the Redmi Note 5 Pro (2.45%) and the Samsung Galaxy J2 (2.39%).

So it is pretty obvious that the Apple iPhone 7 is currently the most popular smartphone in the world. But that might change since it could lose support for iOS updates in the next year or two. The phone was released on September 16th, 2016 and is equipped with a 4.7-inch LCD display with a 750 x 1334 resolution. It is powered by the Apple A10 Fusion chip and sports a 12MP rear camera and a 7MP FaceTime camera. A 1960mAh capacity battery keeps the lights on.

Verizon will give you the 32GB version of the phone for free with the purchase of a new line ($399.99 otherwise) while those adding a new line can pick up the 128GB variant for 24 monthly payments of $5 ($449.99 otherwise). At Metro by T-Mobile, the 32GB iPhone 7 is $49.99 when you switch to the pre-paid carrier.
