Are our smartphones causing us to cheat on, or be cheated on by, our spouses or partners?

Smartphones are wondrous tools, no doubt about it. They keep us connected with friends, family, and other things that are important to us. They also are great ways to be productive at work.  On the social front, new avenues have been created to connect with people. It is an entrancing relationship, and anywhere you look, you will find groups of people situated head-down, looking at their phones.

Is all that time we are spending on our phones hurting our closest relationships? The devices, coupled with a number of apps, may be proving to be very effective tools at help us cheat, or be cheated on.

Victoria Milan operates a service akin to the infamous Ashely Madison, whose motto is, “Life is short. Have an affair.” Victoria Milan promotes the idea to “Relive the passion. Find your affair.” Perhaps in an effort to make the service look benevolent and be a way to restore stale relationships, Victoria Milan offers a number of “testimonials” from users who proclaim exactly that.

However, Victoria Milan did conduct a survey on affairs and dating, and found that 45% of the respondents said they either had already cheated on their significant other, or have been thinking about cheating due to their partner spending too much time on their phone.

When you couple that reality with the wide selection of apps (from Ashley Madison’s own, to Snapchat) that facilitate sneaky behavior, it looks like our smartphones are not necessarily an ideal device to have with you all the time.  We have seen before assertions that the tech and apps could be killing our sex drive.  If you think technology is snuffing out the flame between you and yours, perhaps you should follow the progress of our very own Nick, who has been living without a smartphone for the past couple weeks. Maybe a break will do some good?
