Samsung Galaxy S4 sales slumped to 5 million units in August, still topped the ranks

Samsung Galaxy S4 sales slumped to 5 million units in August, still topped the ranks
Despite being the best-selling smartphone in the traditionally slow August, the Galaxy S4 sell-through rate has dipped to 5 million units then, which might have prompted Samsung to speed up the development and release of the Galaxy S5.

Counterpoint Research’s monthly model tracker pegs the S4 on top of all phones, followed by the iPhone 5 16 GB and iPhone 5 32 GB models. There are three affordable Nokia Asha models in the top 10 ranking, and the rest is pretty much all Samsung:

Top 10 models sold Globally in August 2013

Rank Brand Model

  1. Samsung Galaxy S4 International version
  2. Apple iPhone 5-16GB
  3. Apple iPhone 5-32GB
  4. Nokia Asha 501
  5. Samsung Galaxy Note II
  6. Samsung Galaxy S III mini
  7. Samsung Galaxy S III
  8. Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini I9190
  9. Nokia Asha 205
  10. Nokia 105

The research company expects to gauge from September sales, which traditionally start the holiday shopping ramp-up, whether the slump of Galaxy S4 sales is due to seasonality, or simply the strength of competitive offerings this year.

I would've liked to see the Top 10 "smartphones" sold Globally in August 2013 :/

I'm not surprised about the lower than expected sales. I love my S3 but I wouldn't upgrade to the S4... It's still an amazing phone, but I just don't feel like it was a big enough improvement. Hopefully the S5 is more innovative.

every phone that comes out doesn't have to be innovative every time.

Or maybe you couldn't afford it, or just not telling us the truth, tht you dont have S3 at all.

I have the S3, I'm typing on it now. But I didn't get the S4 for the same reason, it just not enough of an upgrade.

Now the Note 3 is looking like it's well worth it.

You're accusing me of not owning the S3 because I said I wasn't upgrading to the S4?
How'd you come to that conclusion..

Your opinion. Every one else think S4 was a big improvement on S3. Whichever way, any phone which comes out is meant to be be an improvement on the previous.

Your right it's my opinion that's why I said "I wouldn't upgrade to the S4"
I didn't speak for anyone else.

Why isnt iPhone 16+32gb sales combined? All those other phones up there have other storage variants too...?

Calm down. They split GS4 sales up, to. This was only the international version. They didn't count US variants.

because they are different phones storage and and 5s and 5 and "different" other wise you could combine the s4 and s3 since they are the same

I mentioned nothing about the 5 and 5s, they're two different phones and it doesn't take a child to recognise that they shouldn't be added together. I really don't understand the point of your comment

Are you kidding !!! Wait whaaaaaaaaat !
Why iPhone 5 sales are split in 2 for 16 GB and 32 GB! This is the stupidest thing ever ! What the hell is going on here as if the 32 GB iPhone 5 is not an iPhone 5 ! I see what has been done here ! This is truly a shame ! And I think PhoneArena must note that !

Sorry to ruin the happiness of Sammy's fans but this research indicates that the iPhone 5 is the top selling smartphone globally !

I agree but you shouldn't be comolaining since Apple is the king of misleading positive press and statistic stretching. If one misleading stat goes against them they still have 99% of the misleading stats going in their favor such as that last article about handsets that receive updates the longest.

First, your statement is totally unfounded, since they didn't give any numbers for any other phone on the list. For all you know, number 2 and number 3 sold a million each.

Secondly, they split GS4 sales also. This is only the international version, the US variants weren't counted.

And, were you griping when Apple announced total sales of two different phones at launch, instead if reporting what each sold, to try and pad their numbers?

apple wish think of it this was the iphone 5s was limited because they are on back order because every person wanted something new like a campaign color, so they waited and and found so many things wrong with the io7 and the fact that it looked like android and just went and got a android phone. But the s4 is what now 6 months old and even the 5 mil units this month kick most other phone asses. apple did 5mil on 5s first week or 2. unless apple adds something new and bigger screen like it is about to they will lose more and more since no jobs to help talk about new phones.

Wait 5 million in the slowest month of a half-yo phone is bad? Not sure Rival One or Rival Z sold as much in their entire life.

Right! S4 is on top (or close if you combine iPhones), so that's a bad thing?

How do we know sales slumped if you aren't giving us the target? 5 Million in the slowest month sounds pretty good to me.

Well, you know sales slumped if they are significantly lower than preceding months. A slump had nothing to do with target sales.

The amazing thing is that the iPhone 5 sales should have slowed down to a trickle with the expectation of the new model arriving next month...and that 'trickle' was still more than any other phone bar the still very new Galaxy S4.

'Nuff said.

If 5million sold is bad then most other OEMs are doing an awful job, haha!

Oh man, and Nokia?
Lumias nowhere to be seen!
Even their supposed best selling model, the "blockbuster" Lumia 520 has been outsold by three Ashas!

Btw, I am blown away by the fact that the Note 2 has been outselling a Galaxy S3.
It gives some serious material for market analysts.
