Qualcomm demonstrates its future display: 5.1-inch Mirasol 577ppi screen
And Qualcomm is now showing what one future technology will look like. The company is showing off its Mirasol front-lit power efficient 5.1-inch 2560 x 1440 pixel screen with a density of the whopping 577dpi.
The Mirasol technology differs a lot from the current crop of LCD/OLED displays. Unlike them it actually reflects light that falls on it in a way that is close to what we see in nature. The Mirasol display however does not have the same vibrant colors as on modern displays. It is colorful and not black and white like most e-ink, so it basically holds a middle ground. It is also nearly 6 times more power efficient.
Being close to the way we see things in nature it does not tire the eyes so much and that’s one of its huge benefits, apart from the sharpness.
Bad news is Qualcomm is still a couple of years away from bringing it to mass market. The company however is already showing early prototypes of the screen in a smartwatch and a handset. Take a look at the images below.

I had the S3 with 308ppi and now i have the S4 with 441ppi, and i can notice the difference easily with a naked eye, but i am not sure if i will be able to do that between 441 and 577.
But anyway, i guess it will be ridiculous to push pixels density more, a 16x16 icon on a 5" 320x240 screen, will be large enough to be easily clickable, but on a 1920x1080, you need to scale that same icon six times in order to keep it clickable, same for text size.

Since the GS3 and 4 uses different Pentile setups.....are you sure what you notice isnt that?
Cuz looking at my Droid X1 and Rezound....I couldnt tell the difference all that much. At normal viewing distances......maybe 1-2 inches from my face I could.....but thats not normal use for me.

Mainly that's due to the subpixel count. The techology that Samsung used on there S3 had a lower subpixel (the little light switches that make up a pixel) count than that of competitors; hence some people saw edges of icons.

I actually like mirasol displays I think they are the next big leap in screens.
but 577ppi?!? really?! thats waaay too much. I have very sharp eyes and I actuly can see pixels of HTC One. but I think even 320 ppi of iphone is enough! hech, I think my galaxy note ( original) is okay I guess.
this high ppi can do no good, it actuly lay a hell of a procces on gpu to calculate. wich leads to battery drain.
its only a marketing move...

They can argue about ppi all they want. PPI's could go high as they want. The real deal here is the display tech. With device screens getting bigger, LCD and OLED efficiency may not get any better. This could be the answer to that. Also, the answer to Samsung's monopoly on AMOLED.

Also consider color saturation, ppi is ok for resolution but having the right color temperature is important, consider the Xperia z while good res colors dont look right, as well as no viewing angles.

Software can change color warmth...
I use an application on my work computer to adjust color temperature based on light levels and the degree of my hangover.

I agree, you can use software for calibration and so on, but for example talking about OLED, if diode is physically unable to reproduce certain color temperature then you can use any software you want it won't help.

It's awesome but too much overkill. We still need more power from the mobile GPUs.
Even full-fledged discrete graphics cards on PCs struggle on that resolution.

If anything, higher res displays are easier on your eyes as things look more natural and smooth. Should be less strain on your eyes, not more.

I think I'd pass on this screen, for a phone anyway.
The lack of blacks will cause HUGE problems when trying to use it for movies/games.

The pixel density wars are almost ridiculous. You aren't going to read zoomed out text on a 5" screen. You are going to zoom in. I guess it's cool to brag about your screen resolution, but in real world applications, it doesn't have a lot of use. My 47" 1080P screen looks just fine, thank you very much.
