Android still the top OS dog, has double the share of iOS
1. dacastrator (Posts: 232; Member since: 22 Sep 2011)
This is totally not a surprise. Just proves that a lot more people are happier with their android device.
12. iKingTrust (banned) (Posts: 716; Member since: 27 Jul 2011)
Not at what it proves.
Android OS is an open OS that is on many devices Apple only has one so how why even make this news? Actually this looks bad for Android because they shouls have a much larger shar than this. Apple has 28% of the share with only 1 device.
17. heyitzme (Posts: 87; Member since: 03 Jan 2011)
not just one device. this is including tablets on the 28%
51. NeXoS (Posts: 286; Member since: 03 May 2011)
It includes ALL ios devices, that means:
iphones 1, 2, 3, 4
ipods, 1, 2, 3, 4
ipads 1, 2
the share of iphone 4 by itself is MUCH MUCH smaller than 28%, look at the chart:
e.php?m=Articles.Images&f=name &id=46461&name=4-Top20MobilePhones.jpg&caption= &title=Image+from+%22Android+s till+the+top+OS+dog%2C+has+dou ble+the+share+of+iOS%22&kw=
It's only 13%. So, 28% - 13% = 15% of the traffic comes from ipads and ipods. Of the 13%, that also include iPhone 3GS, since Apple is still making and selling those. The actual iPhone 4 share is even smaller than 13%!!!
18. p0rkguy (Posts: 685; Member since: 23 Nov 2010)
Only in August, Millenial has started counting both smartphones and tablets, and understandably Apple’s iPad gave Cupertino a push as it dominates the market. RIM’s BlackBerry ended up third with 13% of all impressions.
That means in that chart iOS consists of the iPhone 1-4, iPad 1-2, and possibly all iPod Touchs.
You need to stop using that argument on the fact that Android OS has so many devices while Apple "only" has 1. Apple can make more varieties, they just chose not to. That defense is flawed on its own.
25. darth8ball (Posts: 520; Member since: 02 Aug 2011)
Apple hater here, saying that including the iPhones 1-4 both iPads, and the iTouches, Android is still available on many more devices.
However is it really about popularity or should it be about which OS suits the INDIVIDUAL best and lets the consumer feel OK about which company they give their hard earned dollars to.
39. p0rkguy (Posts: 685; Member since: 23 Nov 2010)
So what if Android has more devices?
It was a direct response to iKingTrust's "Apple has 28% of the share with only 1 device."
I respond when there's ignorance in user-posts, not into a battle of loyalty between brands.
21. dacastrator (Posts: 232; Member since: 22 Sep 2011)
We'are talking OS here not device dumbo..
23. BarneyDroid (Posts: 35; Member since: 01 Sep 2011)
Not one device... How many are still being sold? Verizon has 4 phones, AT&T has 3 phones and that is not including ipads

im done wasting my time on this. You all know iOS is the best. Not even the biggest Apple hater can deny iOS. You might not like Apple but iOS is amazing. SO f@@##ing what you cant customize? Jailbreak and get on with life.
My jailbreak allows me to customize more than any OS. Thank you.
46. p0rkguy (Posts: 685; Member since: 23 Nov 2010)
No.... it actually doesn't. iOS was great 2-3 years ago, but now it's just "uhh, you again?"
It's actually still one of the most limited customization after JB.
48. G-Reg (unregistered)
Really? Your iOS is the best, yet you have to break your beloved iOS user agreement to do what you want to do.
I can definitly understand why your done wasteing time. The amount of contradictions that your head has to ignore would be quite tireing.
49. SuperAndroidEvo (Posts: 4774; Member since: 15 Apr 2011)
iKingTrust, facts are facts & even if you jailbreak an iPhone the customization is VERY limited. I guess you have never jailbreaked your iPhone huh? If you have then you would know that fact. I helped jailbreak my buddies iPhone 4 so it would work on T-Mobile & you know what he STILL can't do a fraction of what I can on Android. SO "im done wasting my time on this. You all know iOS is the best. Not even the biggest Apple hater can deny iOS. You might not like Apple but iOS is amazing. SO f@@##ing what you cant customize? Jailbreak and get on with life." Dude you sound like a little girl who is talking smack while hiding behind your mothers skirt! lol
WEAK like the girl on your avatar! lol

Not everyone cares about superficial customization.

Newest android updates have made the OS better, and with some lessons thought and some promises made things could keep steady

I assume that ourr Galaxy S2 is not there because the forecast projection is of August, but difineetly the GS2 is the best for now.
6. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
before anyone starts complaining about this phone or that, this is obviously a US chart. Huge sellers like the worldwide SGS1 and 2 are missing from the list. I see they still break down phones by version instead of just its main brand as the vibrant, capivate, facinate all have their own categories.. but yet, there is only 1 iphone category while 2 are being sold and probably 3 are widely active.
7. remyrz (Posts: 200; Member since: 28 Oct 2010)
.... why this guys keep separating the Galaxy's series >.> gosh.. this Isheeps are so afraid of the truth.. and the SGS I and II are not even here... -___-
8. theBankRobber (Posts: 674; Member since: 22 Sep 2011)
I love the image they used above of the Android cutting the Apple in half, Haha. I'm really glad to see the EVO 4g up their on the list, and close to the top. With Sprint only having half the consumer base as both Verizon and AT&T, I'm pretty impressed. But then again at the time Sprint had no other good phones like the EVO, but I'm still impressed.
9. theBankRobber (Posts: 674; Member since: 22 Sep 2011)
Oh Android isn't cutting it in half, had to zoom in to see what it really was, Haha lol still funny

41. jroc74 (Posts: 5853; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
Yea....cuz being on many phones has done wonders for the old Win Mo ...
The one vs. many argument can go but so far.
60. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
you do realize that apple still sells the iphone 3GS as well as the iphone4 and they have a near 50/50 split of the total iphone sales, right?
Oh no.. u thought just the iphone4 was for sale...
And since that number just says "iphone" it probably also means any active ATT iphone4's, VZW iphone4's, 3g iphones and possibly 2g iphones as well.
the android phones are broken down by individual brands, even if its the same phone on multiple carriers.
silly silly ibot.
14. pongkie (Posts: 526; Member since: 20 Aug 2011)
android is like the zerg
apple is like protoss
windows is like nvm XD
15. Mooooo (Posts: 212; Member since: 27 Aug 2011)
All i can say is over and over again. I had an iphony 3g for 2.5 years. There is a reason i am not using one anymore and its not the money. Its that it is not all that. It was a decent phone yes. However, Android for me has been a much more enjoyable experience. I know for the apple fans its hard to understand this but for me Android is a much better experience. It is not perfect but nothing is except maybe Bada. Hehe Hi Pete.
Anyways, android continues to gain ground. Again I am a long time Linux Desktop guy since 1997. Started on mandrake and moved on from there. Typing this on Linux Mint 11 btw. I love my Linux driven phone. Go Android!

Congratulations! Android is great! I have a GS2 and an iPhone4..
They each have their advantages and disadvantages.
Love the screen on the GS2, but the build quality could be better though!

UBS: iPhone’s 89% retention rate crushes competition; next closest is HTC at 39%
Lets talk about this since Phone Arena has not
29. darth8ball (Posts: 520; Member since: 02 Aug 2011)
Again your not taking into consideration that you can move between phone makers and stay within the Android OS if variety and what is the best (or most desireable) at the time. For that you can't compare Apple and Android
36. iKingTrust (banned) (Posts: 716; Member since: 27 Jul 2011)
Why would i want to switch phones? have you see the ugly ass phones out there
53. stealthd (unregistered)
Android as a whole only had a retention rate of 55% in the same survey, and 31% of Android owners were planning on getting the next iPhone.
55. protozeloz (Posts: 5394; Member since: 16 Sep 2010)
on the 45% of the ones that gave it low rate 31% of those plan on getting an iphone to put is simple you have 100 android customers
55 are happy with android
45 arent much
out of those 45 only 15 plan on getting an iphone
42. jroc74 (Posts: 5853; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
If I liked the iOS, the iPhone and wanted another iPhone...what do I chose...iPhone. if I like Android and want to use Android again....I can go HTC, Samsung, Motorola, Sony, etc.
Step outside the box sometimes and look at the big picture..
61. remixfa (Posts: 14255; Member since: 19 Dec 2008)
that doesnt mean that 61% of people are leaving HTC and going to iphone. Most of them will leave HTC and go to the big hotness of the year, which is the galaxyS2. People pissed at samsung will bounce over to HTC or LG.
most people on android are not going to switch to iOS. The actual OS retention rate is much much higher than you are trying to pretend it is.
19. Mooooo (Posts: 212; Member since: 27 Aug 2011)
Lets talk about I would not ever go back to an Iphone. However, I am not the norm user. I run Linux as a desktop have been messing around with computers probably longer than most of you guys on here have been alive.
47. networkdood (Posts: 6330; Member since: 31 Mar 2010)
WOW, superb comeback....you must be an iphone user....
20. TKFox007 (Posts: 303; Member since: 02 Nov 2010)
iOS is only on 2 Apple mobile devices and on 2 carriers. Android is on many, many, many more devices and on every carrier in America.
If the iPhone was on every single carrier the numbers would be different. Something like this should be taken with a grain of salt because of the fact that Android just multiplies like gremlins.
Android is everywhere and there's more Android devices, of course it's going to surpass iOS. That's common sense.
24. dacastrator (Posts: 232; Member since: 22 Sep 2011)
If someone wants an iPhone, no matter where its at, they will buy it. If you want something, you will go for it. And it doesnt matter whether android is all over the place, if people doesnt like it, they wont buy it. So it just shows that more people are into androids.
27. taz89 (Posts: 2014; Member since: 03 May 2011)
forget the hardware.chart is about the operating system and more people wanted the android os than ios....on a side not, android provides varieties of hardware which has proved successful and the chart proves that...apple dont like to provide choice but they are also doing well its as simple as that...lets not make excuses, the chart is what it is.
43. jroc74 (Posts: 5853; Member since: 30 Dec 2010)
Like I mentioned to someone else...
Being on many phones on many carriers didnt help the old Win Mo... Some of yall must not remember Win Mo was like 1 or 2 in market share with RIM before the iPhone launched in 2008.
Its a lil more than many phones on many carriers. And BOGO deals, deep discounts were around back then too.
Some of just need to give Android credit as something ppl want. When the iPhone launched...ppl chose it and choice was fine then. Now all of a sudden choice comes with asterisks when it concerns Android.
30. darth8ball (Posts: 520; Member since: 02 Aug 2011)
statistics are like abstract art....show them to 100 people and you will get at least 50 different interpretations on what the mean and represent.
31. cybervlad81 (Posts: 85; Member since: 04 Apr 2011)
I don't see this listed here and am curious, Apple iPhone is listed once, no model, no version, 3g, 3gs, 4 whatever. Same thing with the Curve, the Moto Droid, and various others. So is it safe to say that the numbers include sequels to that device? i.e Moto Droid includes 2, 2 global, and 3.
32. corporateJP (Posts: 2431; Member since: 28 Nov 2009)
Truly is a "no brainer".
I'll still take most Androids over any iPhone, that's just my opinion.

They can say what they wanna say it's good to be number 1
37. InspectorGadget80 (unregistered)
Of course while Android is coming out with newer hardware every few months and is on every other carrier around the country including the u.s. while Apple have the same design and only comes out with a new phone every 1 or 2 yrs their sales is slowing down. HTC/Samsung top two manufactures and gets lots of recognition from their designs. Unlike Apple all their designs is the same nothing changes
40. theBankRobber (Posts: 674; Member since: 22 Sep 2011)
People keep posting on here about iPhone being only one device, that's their ONLY excuse left in the Apple rule all hand book. I'm sorry if Android sticks with Just the nexus phones, they would still sell more then iphones. People happen to LIKE the features of Android, what features you people always ask besides live wallpaper and widgets? For 1 I cant stand to have my Apple device only synced to 1 computer, 2. I hate to have to go through just itunes for my form of music. 3. No changing the batteries, 4. No SD card, its like Apple controls everything about your phone and is still only stuck to one computer. And that super tiny ass screen for tiny ass hands. 4" screens or bigger are to big bulls**t is so f**king played out, I was born with half my fingers on my right hand and I can't stand phones with screens smaller then 4".
45. gallitoking (Posts: 4718; Member since: 17 May 2011)
this article just stimulates the Android-Apple war more... because we all know Android saturates the markets with products so it only makes sense that they would have biggest share... and Apple has the biggest sales... PA does this so they can have more people at each other throats... and we fall right into them... good job PA
56. protozeloz (Posts: 5394; Member since: 16 Sep 2010)

You go to a carrier store shelf and on the main counter all you see are Android phones while other devices like Wp7 is hidden from plain sight. You also have reps tryin to sell Android as well. What do you think Customers will buy? You guessed it fanboys, Android! Of course Apple and Wp7 are the minority here when it comes to "quantity." Lets put on the main counter the three OSs side by side and have reps initially present these three choices to new and old customers. What do you fanboys think will happen? Not every customer will choose Android. Friends and fanboys when you go fishing and in the pond are thousands of croppies and hundreds of bass, what do you think people will catch most? Yeah more croppies...
