Summary and should you buy it

After a month or so of using the Huawei Watch GT 7 Pro, I can confidently say that this is one of my favorite smartwatches ever. It doesn't reinvent Huawei's GT formula in any way, but its extremely fresh design, intuitive and innovative fluoroelastomer strap, and comprehensive set of fitness tracking and wellness features, including its blockbuster battery life, make the Watch GT 7 Pro a device that can very easily fit your lifestyle.

The Huawei Watch GT 7 Pro is great for people who need a premium sports watch that doesn't have to be charged every day (or every week, for that matter). If we have to compare it to the GT 6 Pro, the biggest functional improvements are to be found in advanced cycling, skiing, and trail running tracking, GPS endurance, and a new recovery score feature.

At £380, the Watch GT 7 Pro costs roughly the same as the latest Apple Watch Series 12, or the Galaxy Watch 9, making it a costly investment. However, it has a number of unique advantages, which might just make it the preferred choice for many consumers in the market for a new smartwatch.

Design and display

The EasyCross strap is a game-changer.

I'm not the biggest athlete, but I appreciate the Huawei Watch GT 7 Pro's sporty vibe. Overall, the design is very similar to that of its predecessor, but it comes in some fresh new colors. I tested the super-chill green model, and there is an equally notable yellow one. I think these new colorways manage to be bold and distinctive without coming across as cheap.

The watch itself comes with a 1.47-inch AMOLED display, which has been great in my experience. It's bright enough for all sorts of conditions. I've never had a problem reading it in direct sunlight, and it should be fairly durable as well, thanks to sapphire glass. After a month or so of use, I don't have a single scratch on it.

One thing that I didn't expect to make such an impression on me is the new tuck-under EasyCross strap design. It's a very small thing on paper, but in practice, for an object that you deal with every day and that you wear on your body, I think it's actually genius and makes a world of difference.

Recommended For You

The strap fits very neatly under itself. There is nothing loose or sticking out, and it just looks stylish and clean. The standard fluoroelastomer band is quite comfortable. I haven't felt any discomfort throughout the day wearing the watch. It's also light and soft enough to be comfortable for overnight wearing as well, if you also want to track your sleep.

At the same time, the fit is tight enough to give you confidence in the sports and health measurements.

Software

Harmony OS is intuitive, fast and functional

The Huawei Watch GT 7 Pro is running Harmony OS 6.1, and it supports both Android and iPhone phones. The latest Harmony OS version hasn't changed much, which isn't a bad thing. It's simple, has a strong set of core features and apps, and is very fast and responsive.

Technically, there is support for third-party apps, but in reality, there is very little for you to browse and install. Thankfully, the built-in functionality of the watch is quite rich and covers all the essentials, from timers, calculators and remote shutter, to Huawei's solid line-up of health-tracking tools.

While the more premium Huawei Watch 6 has a fancier version of Harmony OS with more intricate animations, translucency, and other eye candy, the version on the Watch GT 7 Pro is, as usual, a bit simpler. But it's still nicely animated, and of course, that simplicity is one of the things that enable the superb battery life on Huawei's GT watch line.

One issue I run into from time to time with the Watch GT 7 Pro is when I keep my hands in crossed position, the watch's screen registers this as a long-press and enters watchface choosing mode. There should be some way for Huawei to patch this and have the watch avoid registering such involuntary actions.

Health and fitness features

Especially great for running, cycling, swimming and diving and more

I did a bunch of cycling while using the Huawei Watch GT 7 Pro, and I found its advanced tracking features very convincing. The watch would work with various cycling styles and provide a tracking experience that is closer to a pro cycling computer rather than a simple calorie tracker.

During my cycling sessions, the watch's GPS proved very accurate, and I was very impressed by how quickly the watch recognized if I'm moving on the bike or if I stopped for a rest. It would almost immediately pause and resume the session based on what I was doing.

Some of the features that make it different from a basic calorie counter include route elevation preview, climb planning, sharp turn warning, and more.

One of the big things with the Huawei Watch GT 7 Pro is that Huawei has found a way to combine signals from the GPS, the gyroscope, and accelerometer data to keep a consistent route tracking, even when GPS signal quality drops significantly (such as when you're moving under the trees or other places with reduced view of the sky).

Other workouts and other sports improvements in the GT 7 Pro include the dedicated skiing modes, which now support indoor and outdoor skiing. They give you turn counts, frequency, G-force tracking, and other metrics that skiers would appreciate. There are some upgrades to the golf app as well, including shot distance detection, custom green pins, auto-rotating green view, and more.

Runners and hikers will appreciate the better GPS battery life in trail running mode. While the previous watch stayed active for up to 40 hours, the GT 7 Pro can deliver up to 51 hours of continuous GPS tracking, making it great for long-distance events.

There's a lot the Huawei Watch GT 7 Pro does in terms of sleep tracking and wellness. While the watch is relatively shy about giving you specific advice on how to optimize each metric, it is quite good at breaking things down into readable measurements that you can then take and analyze on your own. There are some familiar metrics, like heart rate measuring, blood oxygen, stress levels, arterial stiffness, ECG and more.

The new physical readiness score is a welcome addition. After you wear the watch for 3 days, it would combine your sleep data with your other measurements, like HRV, your activity levels, and your stress, to come up with your readiness rating. Its whole point is to give you an idea of to what extent your body is ready to go for a new workout today.

Battery life

A competent smartwatch that rarely visits the charger.

The battery life is one of my favorite things in the Watch GT7 Pro because it can go for up to 21 days in light use, or about 12 days with more active fitness and health tracking. If you have always-on display enabled, these numbers will drop a little bit, but especially if you stick with a more energy-efficient watch face, you won't really be trading much in terms of battery life.

For most users out there, this means that you only need to charge the Watch GT7 Pro every couple of weeks, or maybe once a week if you are a very active user. This is in stark contrast with watches from Apple, Samsung, or Google, which need to be charged almost daily.

Pros

  • Incredible battery life
  • Comprehensive health and fitness features
  • Intuitive and stylish EasyCross strap
  • Bright and functional display
  • Accurate GPS tracking

Cons

  • Very few third-party apps
  • Could provide more actionable suggestions based on measured data
