Google just announced that it will finally stop requiring iPhone users to install an app to join a Google Meet call. Instead, anyone with an Apple mobile device will be able to join calls through their browser.
You can now join Google Meet calls through Safari
For years, iPhone users needed to install the Meet or Gmail apps on their devices before joining a Google Meet call. That added an unnecessary obstacle for Apple users who are not using Google products.
Now, Google announced on its Workspace Updates blog that it will allow users to join calls from Safari on iOS devices. The process is straightforward, as iOS users who don’t have any of the apps installed are automatically redirected to Safari when they click on a Google Meet link.
The update is already rolling out and it may take up to 15 days before becoming visible for everyone.
Do you have any of Google’s apps installed on your phone?
You don’t need a Google account either

Google will even allow users to enter calls without logging into a Google account. While there’s an option to sign in, they can just input their name and join the meeting in a few seconds.

The most surprising part of this update is how late it is. Apple started allowing users to share FaceTime links with anyone who doesn’t own an iPhone with iOS 15 in 2021. While there’s no FaceTime app for non-Apple devices, Android and Windows users can join calls in a browser.
While many users were disappointed that web users can’t start FaceTime calls, the feature was met very positively. One Reddit user said that making this possible was a great move from Apple as it would allow them to get their Android-using friends and family involved.
A simple solution
With the new process, joining Google Meet calls through Safari is easier than ever.
Here are the few simple steps to follow:
Tap the meeting link
Input your name or sign in to a Google account
Allow access to your camera and microphone
Tap the “Ask to join” button
While most iPhone users who use Google Meet often are likely to already have at least Gmail installed on their devices, this is a very nice quality-of-life update. The new feature should also work on any iPad device and with third-party iOS browsers.
I plan to use this
Google Meet was the main reason for me to have Gmail installed on my iPhone, as that’s certainly not my favorite mail client. I’ll keep using the app to join meetings, but it’ll make inviting other people to my calls much easier.
