Samsung is also making a wide-folding phone this year. | Image by Techmong
This year, Samsung and Apple are going to engage in a battle that they have never had before. The new Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will be taking on the foldable iPhone Ultra, and there might already be a decided winner.

According to a multitude of reports, Samsung will be launching two new Fold phones this year, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. The former will be a wide-folding phone similar to the foldable iPhone and the latter will be the real successor to the excellent Galaxy Z Fold 7 from last year.
In a recent poll, we asked you which foldable phone you were thinking of getting this year, and over 28 percent of you — the majority of the votes — said that you were thinking of buying the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.
That isn’t surprising considering how good the Fold 7 was and the fact that the Fold 8 will have a smaller front camera as well as a 5,000 mAh battery alongside an even shallower crease. For comparison, the Fold 7 had a 4,400 mAh battery.

Fascinatingly, the new Galaxy Z Fold 8 got more votes than the foldable iPhone as well, with over 23 percent of voters choosing Samsung’s take on a wide-folding phone over Apple’s. The third highest number of votes — a little over 22 percent — were people who don’t plan on getting a foldable phone this year at all.
Only 17 percent of respondents said that they were getting the foldable iPhone, also known as the iPhone Ultra according to some recent reports. Lastly, a little over nine percent of you said that you were getting a different foldable phone this year. What about you?

Apple needs a strong first impression

Foldable phones have been out for years, and Apple is very late to the party. The company wanted to make a foldable flagship with no visible crease and a very durable frame. Reports indicate that neither of these two goals have been achieved successfully.
If the foldable iPhone Ultra doesn’t make a good first impression, or if the form factor isn’t popular with customers, then Apple will be forced to go back to the drawing board.
I’d be extra cautious
As I have argued before, I think that it would be smart to skip Apple’s foldable this year. It’s a first-generation product and we don’t know what problems might come with it.
If you absolutely must get a new foldable this year, then the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is your safest bet. And it seems like most of you agree.
