The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is right around the corner. Qualcomm will officially unveil the next family of flagship smartphone processors on September 22 during the annual Snapdragon Summit. However, early benchmarks started to pop up, and the latest one initially got me worried.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 is supposed to be the fastest and most aggressively overclocked version of the new silicon. The latest leaked benchmark, however, put is behind the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.

The benchmark shows a Vivo V2606A device scoring 3,434 points in the single-core and 9,334 in the multi-core Geekbench test. For comparison, the current Qualcomm champion, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, scores 3,631 and 10,940 in the same test, respectively.
A deeper search reveals that the Vivo V2606A is in fact the upcoming iQOO 16 smartphone, expected to feature the aforementioned Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chipset.

I'm not worried about these low results for a couple of reasons. First, earlier benchmarks of the non-Extreme version of the chipset show much higher performance scores. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro actually scored a whopping 4.83 million points on AnTuTu, 4,388 points in single-core, and 14,273 points in multi-core performance in Geekbench in recent leaked test results.
This is in line with the expected 25% performance gain, compared to the current generation. Second, some of these leaked benchmarks are done in different chipset configurations to test and optimize the silicon. The low scores don't necessarily represent the true performance of the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 family.
The longest smartphone chipset name to date?
Apparently, Qualcomm decided to ditch the Pro moniker and go for a more "extreme" one (pun intended). Earlier rumors suggested the company was going to launch two models, a regular Snapdragon 8 Gen 6, built on a 3 nm node, and a Snapdragon 8 Gen 6 Pro, built using a 2 nm process.
Now it seems that the latter will be called the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. This could be the processor inside the already controversialGalaxy S27 Ultra, and if the collaboration between those two companies continues, we're about to get the longest smartphone processor name to date.
