Things that make the Pixel Tag shine

The Google Pixel Tag is the company's first item tracker, designed to compete with Apple's AirTag, Motorola's Moto Tag, Samsung's SmartTag, and other trackers from rival brands. Its main purpose is to ensure you don't end up losing your important belongings. You can put it in items like your baggage, wallet, and even inside your kid's pocket.

You can then use the Find Hub app to track the exact location of the tag, ensuring the item to which you have attached it is always on your radar. The cool part is that Pixel Tag works not only with smartphones but also with Pixel Watch. Furthermore, if you have Pixel Buds, then you can activate the Gemini capability in them and instruct them to ring the tag for you.

The device offers left-behind alerts, which you can enable to ensure that you don't end up leaving your items behind. This was one of the capabilities users were eager to know whether Google would offer in its item tracker.



We have already seen cases of tags being used for malicious purposes. Google seems to be aware of that, and to ensure that the privacy of its users isn't compromised, it displays an automatic alert on your smartphone when it detects that an unknown tag is traveling with you. It also guides you on how to ring the tracker so that you can precisely locate the place where it is attached.

Design and weight

Google Pixel Tag has an oblong-shaped design and weighs 11.8 grams. It has a height of 46.1 mm, a width of 28 mm, and a depth of 5.4 mm.

The Big G has used polycarbonate and stainless-steel materials in the making of its first-ever finder tag. It has an IP67 water- and dust-resistance rating (up to 1 meter for 30 minutes), which basically means that the device is dustproof and can survive being submerged in up to 1 m of water for up to 30 minutes.

Working of the Pixel Tag

The Pixel Tag is compatible with Bluetooth and Ultra Wideband for precision tracking. You see, Bluetooth-based tags rely on the strength of the Bluetooth signal transmitted by the tracker to determine the location of the tag. Ultra Wideband, on the other hand, calculates the time it takes radio waves to travel from one Android device to another.

Ultra Wideband tracking will display an arrow directing you in the correct direction and will also display the precise distance the tag is from you. Google’s tracker also has a built-in speaker, which you can use to play a sound if you are sure that the lost item is within Bluetooth range.

That said, the Find Hub, through which the tag is tracked, taps into the massive network of Android devices to help you quickly locate your missing items, like baggage, wallets, etc. The working is very similar to how Apple's AirTag functions, with the only difference being that it relies on nearby Apple devices on the crowdsourced Find My network. Pixel Tag, on the other hand, is dependent on Android devices on the crowdsourced Find Hub network.

Battery and compatibility

The item tracker from Google comes with a replaceable battery, which the company claims can easily last for more than a year. The device is compatible with Android phones running Android 9 and later.

The exciting thing is that it doesn't only work with smartphones, but you can also use it with your Pixel Watch.

Pricing and availability of Google Pixel Tag

If you purchase just a single piece of Google's first-ever item tracker, then it will cost you $29. However, if you get a pack of four, you will be charged $99, which is $17 less than what you will pay if you buy four Pixel tags separately. The device is available in only the Fog shade and will hit shelves on November 11.
