The Galaxy S27 Ultra may be hiding a seriously cool surprise

If true, this display innovation would be a complete gamechanger.

The Galaxy S27 Ultra isn't coming for a few months, but interest is already growing by the minute. Just recently, possible renders of the upcoming flagship surfaced, giving us an early glimpse of what Samsung's next high-end phone may look like.

Design is just one part of the story, though. One of the more curious leaks surrounding the next Galaxy S flagship suggests Samsung may introduce a new feature that was initially rumored to arrive on Apple's highly anticipated iPhone Ultra.

According to an X post from August 22, the South Korean tech giant may be working on yet another Corning collab. This time, the focus may not be reducing reflections but rather creating a coating that allows the phone to repair on its own.

That's right, Samsung and Corning may be developing a self-healing coating for the next-gen Gorilla Armor. Rumor has it that this tech would allow the Galaxy S27 Ultra to repair micro-scratches, which can substantially improve the user experience.

Corning and Samsung have a long-standing partnership, and their co-developed Gorilla Armor 2 was celebrated for substantially reducing reflections.

Keep in mind that this is only a rumor at this stage. The leaker behind the claim doesn't appear to have an established track record, so it's worth taking the rumor with a grain of salt.

Months ago, leakers claimed the upcoming iPhone Ultra would actually employ a self-healing panel technology. Little has been mentioned after the initial hype, though, leaving it unclear whether the feature will actually make it on Apple's first-ever foldable phone.

It's definitely curious that a feature initially associated with an Apple device is now associated with Samsung. It's also not the first time the S27 Ultra draws comparison with an iPhone.

For context, recently emerged renders show an S27 Ultra model with what appears to be a camera module very similar to the iPhone 17 Pro. So, while the two comparisons aren't technically related, it's interesting that Samsung's upcoming flagship is now being linked to Apple on both fronts: design and display technology.

Another major display innovation from Samsung

Despite the somewhat annoying red-tint issue affecting some Galaxy S26 Ultra units, its Privacy Display feature was widely celebrated as a genuine display innovation.

If Samsung builds on that foundation, improves the hardware-based privacy technology, and actually makes the glass self-repairable, we could be looking at a Galaxy S27 Ultra that's even more exciting.

If Samsung does indeed create a self-healing coating for the S27 Ultra, I think it could give the flagship a serious advantage over its predecessor. It could even end up surpassing the huge success of the S26 Ultra.

Then again, the company would still have to keep the asking price relatively manageable and ensure the rest of the package is equally good. Otherwise, as exciting as it may be to have a phone that can repair micro-scratches on its own, the novelty may not prove compelling enough for everyone to upgrade.
