Foldable iPhone Ultra design quirk leaves a bad first impression on Apple fans

Next month, Apple will announce its highly anticipated and long-awaited foldable iPhone Ultra. However, aside from the wide-folding design similar to the new Galaxy Z Fold 8, the iPhone Ultra also features another design quirk that not many are a fan of.

The iPhone Ultra resembles a Pixel Fold

According to more leaked iPhone Ultra renders, Apple’s foldable flagship will feature an external display that doesn’t quite touch the edges of the chassis. The design is very similar to Google’s Pixel Fold phones, where the external display has much more rounded corners than the chassis, leaving an empty portion visible on the edge.

In a poll, we asked you whether this would affect your decision to purchase an iPhone Ultra later this year. Less than 19 percent of you said that you would still get the phone even if you don’t like its design because iOS users have waited for a foldable smartphone for way too long.

Something worth taking a look at first

Meanwhile, almost 31 percent of voters said that this design quirk was a dealbreaker for them and that they were not considering getting an iPhone Ultra any longer. The rest of you, a little over 50 percent of respondents, said that you would have to check out the phone in person.

Clearly, this design choice hasn’t sat well with many potential customers, though I still expect the iPhone Ultra to perform exceptionally well after release. If Google Pixel fans keep buying the Pixel Fold phones, then Apple users will almost certainly have no problem adjusting to the iPhone Ultra’s design.

Not a dealbreaker for me

For me, personally, the wide-folding design feels like a bigger barrier to adoption than the display not meeting the edge. Like I said, the Pixel Fold phones look similar, and it’s not like you’re going to want to consume media that demands immersion on the external display.

For the purpose that the outer screen serves, I think that this design is good enough, even if it’s not as sleek as other foldable phones like the Galaxy Z Fold 8. Whether the wide-folding layout sticks around, however, remains to be seen.
