Apple’s new ‘Liquid Glass Display’ gets its first aspiring copycat

Apple is designing a stunning new display. So, naturally, so is someone else.

Apple releases something new, be it even just a minor redesign or a new button, and it then gets copied by multiple other phone manufacturers. It’s a tale as old as the smartphone industry, and its newest episode is about to air, this time focused around the new ‘Liquid Glass Display’ coming to the iPhone.

What Liquid Glass Display?

‘Liquid Glass Display’ is the recently leaked term that Apple will likely use to describe the screen on the iPhone 20 Pro next year: yes, the iPhone 19 is reportedly being skipped. It’s a display design where the edges ever so gently meld into the chassis to provide a borderless experience.

Unlike the Galaxy Edge phones before it, however, the screen won’t bend the contents being displayed. Furthermore, Apple is trying its best to move both Face ID and the front camera below the display without sacrificing the functionality of either, though it’s proving challenging.

That’s Liquid Glass Display for the iPhone 20 Pro and it already has an aspiring copycat.

Oppo is onboard with Apple

According to a new report (translated source), Oppo is working on implementing a similar display on its next flagship smartphone.

A surface as flat as possible, barely visible curved edges, and a display that feels like it’s floating above the phone. All of these are descriptors that have been used to explain Liquid Glass Display by industry insiders over the past few weeks.

Why do you think so many manufacturers mimic Apple?

Not the first time, not the last

Mimicking Apple’s design is a tried and true method of boosting sales across certain markets. Almost everything that Apple has released has been copied by someone, even if Apple copied that particular design from somewhere else too.

Exterior designs for phones, operating system user interfaces, how apps navigate, the camera button, Mixed Reality headsets, and even the AirPods and the MacBook have inspired similar products. Usually, the only plus side to these devices is the lighter price tag.

This is what I was hoping for

Believe it or not, I was hoping for this to happen. I’ve disliked the trend of notches and punch holes and other screen cutouts ever since Apple first popularized it.

As I’ve said a few times before, Apple now has a chance to redeem itself. If it makes a display without any cutouts at all, then I don’t care how many times it gets copied. So Oppo, have at it!
