Xiaomi sub-brand Huami launches the GPS-connected Amazfit smartwatch in the US

Back in August, Xiaomi sub-brand Huami launched an affordable but interesting smartwatch called the Huami Amazfit. At the time of the unveiling, it didn't look like the Xiaomi-made Huami Amazfit will ever make it to the US, but it turns out that we were wrong. That's because Xiaomi's sub-brand has just announced that the Huami Amazfit smartwatch is now available in the United States.

Starting now and lasting until the next Monday, the Huami Amazfit will be available at the promotional price of $129 at Amazfit.com. Once Cyber Monday is over, the GPS-enabled smartwatch will be sold at $159 and will also be available from Amazon.

In terms of hardware specifications, the Huami Amazfit comes with a 1.34-inch circular display running at 300 by 300 pixels, a 1.2GHz CPU paired with 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage space, and a 200mAh battery that's listed to last for five days of uninterrupted use. The Amazfit comes with a ceramic body that's not only IP67 certified (meaning that it's dust proof and water resistant) but that should also provide some decent protection against scuffs and scratches. The watch comes with a plastic band but customers can use any 22mm standard watch band on the Amazfit if the default band isn't up their alley.

The one thing that might make the Huami Amazfit to the fitness crowd is the inclusion of a GPS sensor. In fact, the Amazfit is the world's first smartwatch to include a 28nm GPS sensor, a feat that should limit the battery juice that the GPS needs to keep track of your location.

On the software side, the Amazfit runs a proprietary operating system but the watch can sync up with Android and iOS devices through a dedicated app.

Xiaomi seems to be committed to baby steps when it comes to its US expansion. Just earlier today, the company announced its first-ever presence at CES in Las Vegas, promising to launch an all-new product globally on January 5. The real question that a lot of people are asking right now is +3
