That bonkers Nokia 9 with five cameras was apparently certified in China way back in May
The Nokia brand is back in the limelight, sales numbers are rising, investors seem confident in HMD Global’s growth potential, but we still haven’t seen a full-on flagship Android smartphone released by the 2016-founded Finnish company.
The Nokia 8 Sirocco came close earlier this year with a beautiful 5.5-inch P-OLED screen in tow, as well as 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage space. But the Snapdragon 835 processor was already outdated when the handset made its commercial debut.
Meanwhile, the almost mythical Nokia 9 kept missing rumored deadline after deadline, once again looking likely for an impending launch today. This time, the Snapdragon 845 powerhouse is expected to come with a unique and frankly ridiculous penta-camera arrangement on its back, as well as in-screen fingerprint recognition technology and all the other typical high-end features available right now.
If you’re having trouble believing yesterday’s leaked hands-on picture is legit, you might be surprised to hear the model number seen on the label at the back of that crazy prototype coincides with a phone certified in China months ago.
Specifically, the regional Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) approved a mysterious Nokia TA-1094 device for local use back on May 25. It’s not unusual for companies to seek authorization for certain mobile devices way ahead of time, so just because this TA-1094 hasn’t commercially materialized yet, it doesn’t mean it’s been canceled.
Unfortunately, the certification documents obtained on the heels of yesterday’s purported Nokia 9 leak include no information whatsoever on the phone’s specifications. The high-ender could still feature only two or three rear-facing shooters instead of a record-breaking five, and no, there’s nothing new to report on the pricing and availability front either.
