Specs for the Sony Xperia XZ Premium leak before Monday's unveiling
Earlier today we showed you a render of four Sony Xperia 2017 models that were tweeted by reliable tipster Evan Blass. These four are expected to be unveiled Monday, February 27th, at MWC in Barcelona. One of the models that was included in Bass' renders was the high-end Sony Xperia XZ Premium. This afternoon, we were sent an image of the phone along with the latest rumored specs for the device.

Based on the latest rumor, the Sony Xperia XZ Premium will feature a 5.5-inch display carrying a 2160 x 3840 resolution. Under the hood is the Snapdragon 821 chipset, probably for the same reason that the LG G6 is sporting the same chipset. It seems that Samsung has locked up all available supplies of the Snapdragon 835 SoC for the time being.

The Xperia XZ Premium is said to be equipped with 4GB of RAM and has an IP68 certification rating. On back is a 20MP camera with ultra-fast photo capture and 960fps slow motion recording. Keeping the lights on is a large 3900mAh battery, and Android 7.1 is pre-installed.

Sony's MWC 2017 event will take place at 2:30am Eastern Time this morning. That is 11:30pm Sunday night on the West Coast. We should find out exactly which phones are being introduced, official specs, pricing and availability. If you're up, feel free to check in often.

i wonder what Sony's designers get paid for... recycling the same old tired design since the original Xperia Z, it's embarrasing

Check your calendar, it's 2017, not 2013.

Apple invented recycling. Just look at Apples designs. Also wasn't the iPhone 7 the same design as the iPhone 6s, which is the same as the iPhone 6. Also the iPhone SE is the king of recycled design. Talk about 2011 design. Not to mention the iPhone 6s/7 are the most expensive flagship smartphones, with the lowest resolution displays on the market. The real joke is people paying Apple for old tech.

Remind everyone here about the last three years of iPhones. iPhone 7 looks just like an iPhone 6s, which looks like an iPhone 6. Talk about recycling designs. The iPhone SE looks just like the iPhone that first came out in 2011. So I guess Apple is the king of well used and recycled designs. This new XZ premium has a 4k display. The iPhone 7 has the lowest resolution display for any flagship priced smartphone on the market. The real joke is Apple.

It's called sticking to the brand's design language. I used to be critical when Sony kept releasing the same design from the Z till the Z5. But things have changed and they are bringing more tweaks to their design with every new iteration of their models, and I am a fan of the design of the XZ. My only wish is that the side trim should've been made of metal, not plastic, and hopefully that will be foxed in the XZ Premium.

To be fair, it does have a 4k HDR display. And 1080p slow-motion capture, which is pretty insane.

835 is the new Exynos.

Those tender, juicy bezels. Disappointing design and processor. Why the hell is it being released in May when the 835 should be available around that time? Sony just doesn't want to stay relevant anymore.

The May release date is only a rumor. Since they opted for 821 instead of 835, I think the release date would be closer to March or April.

The question is: is the 4K display on XZ Premium always 4K, and not like the 4K in the Z5 premium (which switches to 1080p when not watching hi-def videos)?

I'm curious if it will be a 4k display all the time, or if it will replicate their last attempt and only display 4k with specific media.

It'll make a HUGE difference when using it in VR, and now that Daydream is here it'll be an incredible experience.

You are correct good sir. 4k with be will be pretty amazing. Won't happen with the sd821 though. 835....MAYBE.

The 4K mode only worked in two specific sony apps.

That was true with the Z5 Premium. But we don't know that for the upcoming XZ Premium. It's all speculation at this point.

Even if it only works on the two sony apps, the physical attribute pf 4k lessens the screen door effect, hence it's a lot better 1080p output with lesse visible grid.

This is the problem with the Snapdragon monopoly. OEMs are held back by Snapdragon's arriving too late. Like when all OEMs had to use the S801 because the S805 was delayed. Or when the S4 had the S600 instead of the S800.
