The Samsung Galaxy A90 5G

Samsung’s working hard on the Galaxy Note 10 Lite and Galaxy S11 Lite but these aren’t the only new mid-range devices it’s preparing. The company is reportedly developing a new phone dubbed the Galaxy A91, although its leaked specs sheet suggests it’ll be far from your typical mid-ranger.

Samsung Galaxy S10-like specs and 45W fast charging

According to information received by SamMobile, the Galaxy A91 will be just as powerful as Samsung’s Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 flagships. That’s because it’ll feature Qualcomm’s high-end Snapdragon 855 which is also used in a range of competing devices such as the OnePlus 7 Pro. Samsung plans on pairing the flagship chipset with a very decent 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. Additionally, and unlike the Galaxy Note 10, the phone will support microSD cards of up to 512GB.

Accompanying these components will be a 4,500mAh battery coupled with support for Samsung’s 45W fast charging technology that debuted on the Galaxy Note 10+. It’s unclear, however, if Samsung’s going to include the charger inside the box or if it’ll be available as an optional purchase.

As you may have noticed, the Galaxy A91’s spec sheet is very similar to the Galaxy A90 5G’s. Today’s leak gives the impression the former will be a 4G LTE version of the latter complete with the faster charging mentioned above and slightly improved cameras, but more on these later.

A massive Infinity-U display and three rear cameras

Like its 2019 sibling, the Samsung Galaxy A91 will reportedly arrive equipped with a massive 6.7-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-U display that features slim side bezels, a thicker chin, and a waterdrop notch above. The latter reportedly houses a 32-megapixel f/2.2 selfie camera.

Alongside this should sit a plastic rear panel that features a vertical camera setup. The main sensor looks set to be the same 48-megapixel implementation complete with optical image stabilization that can be found on the Galaxy A90 5G. This is going to be accompanied by a 5-megapixel depth sensor for improved portrait photography and an upgraded ultra-wide-angle camera that bumps the resolution from 8-megapixels to 12-megapixels.

The entire Galaxy A91 setup looks set to be completed by a USB-C port along the bottom, support for Bluetooth 5.0 and NFC, and an in-display optical fingerprint scanner. Don’t, however, expect to find a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Samsung Galaxy A91 announcement date

The Samsung Galaxy A91 will probably be announced in early 2020, perhaps at MWC in late February alongside some other Galaxy A (2020) models. This prediction is based upon the fact it’s being developed with Android 10 and the newest version of One UI pre-installed – Samsung typically debuts its latest software releases on Galaxy S flagships in February.

Samsung’s One UI 2.1 custom overlay will build upon the One UI 2.0 release which we went hands-on with recently. The update introduced a long list of new features including a full screen gesture-based interface, a redesigned camera app, and built-in screen recording. Additionally, the South Korean giant has introduced revamped volume controls, an improved one-handed mode, and more detailed battery stats. Completing the Android 10 and One UI 2 update are enhancements to a variety of Samsung’s own apps including Calendar, Contacts, Internet, Reminder, and My Files.

Interestingly, SamMobile reports that a version of the Galaxy A91 could make its debut in a handful of markets such as India by the end of this year. The model is presumed to be identical to the variant described above in terms of hardware but apparently replaces Android 10 with Android 9 Pie and an older version of Samsung’s One UI software.
