The Essential Phone 2 might finally be near, CEO teases
Today, over two years since the Essential Phone (PH-1) was announced and nearly six months since it was discontinued, Essential CEO and Android co-founder Andy Rubin has teased a potential second-generation smartphone.

In reply to a Twitter thread that was originally started way back in September, Rubin revealed that Essential has plans to “make an announcement” but, in the meantime, customers should “hang tight.” No further information was provided, but the context does strongly suggest that it relates to a new device – the thread was started by somebody asking Essential to make a new smartphone.

The company itself has teased new hardware in the past and recent patents did suggest an all-screen design with essentially no bezels could be in the works. Nevertheless, no concrete information has surfaced. Moreover, there were reports last year that work on a second-generation model had been canceled.

Ultimately, it’s unclear what Essential has up it’s sleeves but it’ll certainly be interesting to see what a new smartphone would look like. After all, the design of the original is often considered ahead of its time thanks to its waterdrop notch and thin bezels. Even by 2019 flagship standards, the device doesn’t look too dated, although the chin could benefit from a slight reduction in size.

Still have the phone as my daily driver. It's the perfect size for running

It also had titanium sides and casing with a ceramic back. Definitely ahead of it's time. It was built like a tank.

If anyone will get rid of the chin and notch at the same time, it will be Essential. Release a phone like that with an OIS camera this time (and hopefully still keeping the notification LED) and no bigger than the Essential PH-1, and you will have a real winner !

Essential is on my list top 5 ugliest phones. Not even iphone X is that ugly.

Funny you say that, i think the PH-1 was ahead on my phone actually. It had the near bezalless design, ceramic body, flat camera back and the centered camera dot before first. Plus the clean pixel like feel with an expensive body. It just lacked a killer camera, was smaller than more premium phone for the price. either way better camera, better price ,position themselves as the new Nexus, am buying one lol.

No wonder why many OEMs copied iphone X design after release and your beloved Samsung mocked its notch but then adding notches now in their phones. Ingenuous!

I dont like Samsung. S3 was the only galaxy I ever wanted to have. Ugly iphone notch is very different from Essential and Sharp S2. If Apple did not make this stupid thing, none of other brands would have it, just Sharp amd Essential. What's the point of losing part of the screen?

I really like the back of the essential phone. Why can't companies set up a camera array mimicking the back of that phone?

Oh man this phone sounds promising too. Just use the same ceramic + titanium design with; - A smaller chin - Pop up camera (they hold a patent) - in screen fingerprint scanner - Triple camera setup

Despite their first phone having some qc issues with hardwares, I really hope their second phone can knock it out of the park. Their commitment to updating and maintaining their software was a really cool and rare thing to see. Especially judging by the fact that their phone didn't do so well.

If they are releasing a successor to the Essential PH-1, they better learn from their past mistakes. I liked the phone, and even bought one for the wife when they went on fire sale last year for $250. But if Essential plans to charge a premium again, it better be better than everyone else, and have no compromises.

Love my PH-1. You can’t beat the immediate Android updates and quality build of this phone. Looking forward to version 2.
