This is the Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch in real life

This is the Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch in real life
Last year's Samsung Gear S - the world's first smartwatch to sport a curved display - will soon get a successor called Gear S2. But, instead of having a curved screen, the new wearable device will offer a circular one, as Samsung realized that people actually like round smartwatches.

The Gear S2 will be officially announced in early September at IFA 2015. Until then, Dennis Miloseski, Vice President of Samsung Design America, is showing us what the new smartwatch looks like in real life via a photo posted on Instagram. As you can see below, the Gear S2 is quite elegant, resembling a traditional timepiece (all circular smartwatches do). Not long ago, Samsung released a Gear S2 teaser video, and some promo images (which you can also see below), but nothing compares to a real-life photo.

Like the Gear S, the Gear S2 runs Tizen OS, so if you're looking for an Android Wear experience you'll have to check out other smartwatches. The S2 might include a nano SIM card slot, which would allow users to connect to a cellular network. Other than that, little is known about the new device.

What do you think of the Samsung Gear S2 thus far?

Actually looks nice. Let's see if it performs, too.

Now that's something which you call a decently designed Smartwatch...

The watch looks terrible. Do not be fooled by the watch face. Look at the watch. It looks like they basically took a galaxy gear and made it round. Look at the band and band connector.

You can't be serious right now. This looks like an actual watch, which is something that many people find attractive. What exactly is terrible about this? The fact that it supposedly looks like a Galaxy Gear? How is that inherently a bad thing now?

"Don't be fooled by the wallpapers. Look at the iPhone 6. It looks like they basically took an iPhone 4 and made it entirely of metal and more curved everywhere. Look at the corners (patented, by the way) and the placement of the speakers and shape of the homebutton."

See how ridiculous it sounds to call something terrible simply because it somewhat resembles its own predecessor?

Ehhh, I think (s)he's talking about the bracelet next to the watch in the first picture. I miss the thumbs down ⬇ button.
I think it's quite classy... And leather straps will make it more classy, I believe.

I can only imagine what his comment would have been if PA would have reported this as Apple Watch 2.

They should have done the Kimmel experiment.

I also don't like it. It screams Samsung design, more electronics than timepiece. Utterly predictable. Some bezels to fit the screen drivers but not too big, so that we don't make zero bezel fans angry, some brushed aluminium colouring and done. Compare this to the vey similar but much nicer LG Watch Urbane LTE. Watch design is not just trying to put all the right elements, thin, bezelless, round screen and done. You need some spice on it too.

How can you make it bezel free, when the bezel is rotating? Try and use those 2 brain cells you hopefully got left....

wait? what? you say you dislike more electronics than timepiece and give props to LG Watch Urbane LTE?. Initially I was agreeing with you because I assumed you might be comparing with Rolex or similar brands. But when I saw LG Watch in your comment, you lost all the creditibility.

Why would anyone compare a £300-ish smart watch to a £10,000-ish mechanical piece? These watches aren't even worth the straps alone on, say, a Cartier; of course the design isn't gunna be on the same level.

World's first curved screen smartwatch? Gear Fit?

Also, what if 3 versions are 3G Tizen, WiFi Tizen, and Android Wear? That would be a good move by Samsung to expand its reach of smartwatch buyers.

Because Tizen is dying off, Samsung aren't amazing at updating Tizen (maybe it'll be different now), and the speed of Android Wear's development growth is amazing atm, and the features on Wear are by far the best on all watch based OS'. The Wi-Fi feature alone is the bee's knees. Plus, 45-47 hours battery life on my old LG G Watch, the first Android Wear piece. It was less than a day when I first had it. The battery life is very good on Wear now.

I don't know it is me or everyone can see the 3 dimensional minute and hour hands. They look like a real watch and not flat like any other screens.

I love the look of the original square Gear S. It looks way cooler to me than this basic watch. I was hoping they'd stick to the square design and maybe give it less bezels and not quite as thick!

I have a LG Urbane Rose Gold watch and I'm looking forward to having this as my first Tizen watch :-) Kudos to Samsung for making a real classy looking watch that actually resembles a a real timepiece and not Dick Tracy's radio watch AKA Apple Watch! lol

In my honest opinion, this is the best looking SmartWatch made by any company thus far, even more so than the Moto G and that's saying something. But, I'm conflicted... I don't know if I should get this as soon as it comes out, or wait for the Tag Heuer watch :/

I believe that you had meant to say the Motorola 360 there, Terry.

Also, what do you think of LG's round watches, then? I think they emulate the look of a real watch rather well, particularly the G Watch R.

Didn't even realize I typed that, thanks for catching that! The partial inattentiveness caused by noisy lounges and all the activity within them doesn't lend itself to accuracy, my bad.

Honestl..., I'm into clean minimalistic design which is why most of my watches are Movados thus far. Now that I think about it, that's really what the Gear S2 reminds me of. A cross between Movado's Sapphire and Luno Sport Chrono lines.

That being said, although the G Watch R and Urbane aren't really my cup of tea I do think that you're right. They do emulate the look of a real watch rather well. I haven't had a chance to play with either so I'm not sure if they have that weightiness that gives high end watches a feeling of solid construction and quality.... But that is something I hope the gear s2 has. That's something every smart watch should have really.

Depends on what you are looking for. I believe the 360 looks more like a smartwatch than it does an actual watch, whereasy this Gear S2 and the LG ones look more like actual watches than smartwatches. So if you like for your smartwatches to look more obviously like wearable tech (which is in no way a bad thing), then the 360 fits that better.

I don't like it. Face is too small, band and bezels look cheesy, no camera, ir blaster, and no android wear. I am not biased towards any company as I have already had a lg g watch first, moto 360 second, then switched to Apple to try the apple watch(which I tried both the sport and metal with milanese), and since jumped to note 5 and repurchased moto 360. My true honest opinion. Still looking forward to announcement though.

If you can change to a leather or metal strap I am sold. If it's only a plastic strap I might have to with the Huawei watch.

Either one it looks a trillion times better than the Apple watch.

I THOUGH I LIKED IT - but now seeing it more, and seeing those pics of it on the wrists - I'm not sure that I do. There is a difference between understated and bland. I can see what they were TRYING to do - but for me it hasn't worked. That Huawei one achieved it a lot better.

In my opinion moto 360 > Huawei watch > Gear 2 > LG rounded watches > iWatch. Still waiting for moto 360 with full rounded display and Amoled technology.
