Apple iPhone 5s continues to be the top selling smartphone in Japan
Japan was responsible for $13.5 billion, or 7.9% of Apple's revenues last year. Japan was also responsible for the largest operating margin that Apple was able to produce from any country at 50.7%. For the December 2013 quarter alone, Apple generated 8.6% of its revenue from Japan, which amounted to about $5 billion. 11.6% of its operating profit came from the country during Q4.
Besides Apple, Sony also did well in Japan during February. The highly regarded Sony Xperia Z1 f, which is a version of the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact made for NTT Docomo, captured 2.3% of the market, while the Sony Xperia Z1 accounted for an additional 2%.

How is it ironic?

I just assumed that Sony will sell more since Japan is their home turf. I guess Japanese people don't support their own brands as much as I thought they would.

I think Japanese people are like rest of people, they like trends, whats cool, etc, as you can see beside Apple they support sony etc. No samsung what so ever. I am surprised that apple is doing so much better than sony :S

So by "support their own brands" Motorola should be the best selling in the US then right?

My comment was clearly an assumption proven wrong.

It's the best in the low end segment next to Nokia thanks to the Moto G.

They had the local Sony phones since forever so that is why they aren't selling in boat loads because they already saturated their market over time. The iPhone just got announced on several major carriers so it has a fairly new run. Once it saturates a bit it should taper off as well for a while.

Can't go wrong with an iPhone 5S. One of the best devices, and it's jedii approved. The jedii approval is what makes it top notch.

well i have a mac because i need the software for it and its a pain in the a$$ rooting and stuff to my android, and i figured that a jailbroken 5 or 5s is adequate, plus i miss the days when i would sit with my iphone 4 with my friends and tweak our iphones and show off lol so, i might as well switch till i get a PC
40. darkkjedii (Posts: 11913; Member since: 05 Feb 2011)
Bro why not just have both? I honestly couldn't part with the iOS ecosystem, but I also love android. In the end I had to go with both. I actually do pretty well with using both OS's day to day lol. Cases and car chargers were another story though.

did u just invent the word d¡ckwaving?
45. darkkjedii (Posts: 11913; Member since: 05 Feb 2011)
Didn't realize that's what he thought I was doing lol.
49. roscuthiii (Posts: 1838; Member since: 18 Jul 2010)
I have nothing to add to this little exchange... I just wanted to say "dickwaving" and see if it was picked up by PA's naughty filter. I tried using the first part of this compound word a few days ago as a given name, properly capitalized grammar and all, and the word filter gave me a spanking by making me change it.
Hmm... seems now it gives you the option to post anyhow, but reminds you of the forum rules. Change approved!

What isn't mentioned here is that many of the major Android manufacturers are barely even represented on the three carriers and the models that are from Samsung, HTC, Motorola, or LG are either niche or old. Of course Apple is going to have a strong sales presence in a market of limited options but I think this report would hold more water if we knew how many people were purchasing these other brands from outside of Japan.

buddy, you cant tell small from big, it explains a lot dont worry, we understand

So why is apple still dominating USA where obesity is so high? (big people, big hands)
34. hurrycanger (Posts: 1190; Member since: 01 Dec 2013)
obesity ==> the fat already fills up some space on the palm, which makes it harder to hold bigger phones.
Big people = big hands.
Fat people = fat hands.
Fat people =/= big hands.
47. willard12 (Posts: 818; Member since: 04 Jul 2012)
Carrier subsidies in the US are higher than the obesity rate.

I thought japanese are sane minded and smart.
37. techperson211 (Posts: 677; Member since: 27 Feb 2014)
Not surprising . But sony is already keeping up in a fast pace. So for now let it be apple.

41. ryq24 (Posts: 507; Member since: 17 Oct 2011)
What happen to Sharp? They used to be number 1! The market really changed very fast!
46. LATOKYO (Posts: 8; Member since: 05 Dec 2013)
This actually is a little ironic.
Japanese cell phones use to lead the market IN Japan before the iphone 3g was introduced. After the inception of the iphone 3g, the market changed and many Japanese started to transition to iphones, as a break to something "new," even though many of the Japanese cell phones were as advanced or more advanced than the iphone.
Living in Japan (Tokyo); in the subway, you will either see people using iphones or sony xperias, you still have good number of people using the ominous flip phones and tv phones.
I find this somewhat ironic because the Japanese cell phone market is actually VERY internalized, meaning, if you're a foreigner and do not have a Visa you can not use a cell phone. You can buy a Data SIM (Internet only) card, but you can't simply go into a store and buy a prepaid SIM card unless you have residency in Japan (Visa) or let a friend do it for you. Yet here we have an AMERICAN company ruling over the Japanese cell phone market, which I find very interesting because almost any popular technological device or vehicle in America are Japanese, EXCEPT their cell phones.
I always wondered what would have happened if Japan pitched their phones in markets outside of Japan. Another interesting note is that the Japanese hold the definition of a "cell phone culture" to the highest degree; that's why Facebook is actually NOT part of the top 5 websites visited in Japan. In Japan, people truly rely on their phones to connect, so it would be natural for them to rule the mobile market in their own country, ironically, it's an American cell phone brand that is leading that market.

This may help help a little:
"I always wondered what would have happened if Japan pitched their phones in markets outside of Japan." They did, and we got the iPhone. Masa Son is a beast.
53. LATOKYO (Posts: 8; Member since: 05 Dec 2013)
All true and fair. But at the end of the day, behind every Apple box, it says, "Designed by Apple in California." (Jonathan Ive and co / Assembled in China) Not, "Designed by Masayoshi Son." Also, the article you posted focuses on Son's business strategy more so than actual Japanese mobile products being sold IN America.
My argument was based off Japanese products designed in Japan and then sold in America, not Japanese thinkers coming to America to relink American products to Japan.
